crock pot girls- a question for you

I dropped my crock pot so I just got a new one (it is large, 7.5 qt). When on low, it will eventually boil the food around the edges. Today I made chili, set it on low and when it started boiling changed the setting to warm. It burned it after a few hours around the edges. Is this normal? Is the pot to big for what I am cooking (my old one was half full with the same amount of food that fills this one about 2 inches high). My old one didn't do either of these things. I am trying to decide if I need to take it back to the store or if my old one just cooked on a lower temp. I usually leave things to cook all day in it when using it (from around 9am to 6pm). Thanks.

Re: crock pot girls- a question for you

  • 7.5 quarts is a biiiiiig crock pot.

I have a 6 quart and that's more than big enough for enormous pots of soup. I use my 3 quart a lot, too. That one has plenty of room for our family of 4 plus leftovers. You really need to fill the crockpot at least 1/2 full to safely leave it for the day.

ETA: to give you an idea, I made soup tonight in the 6 quart that was about 2/3 full. That fed the 4 of us and gave me 6 adult servings left over for the freezer.

  • it's too big for the recipe.  either use a smaller one or increase your recipe and freeze the leftovers.
