Trying to Get Pregnant

+/- OPK Question

I get that you should take OPK test with FMU, but if you are getting + with FMU, shouldn't you get a + later too?  I know, stupid question.  However, yesterday am I got +, last night -, but then again this am +.

Such a newbie question, but I have never used these before!  I'm sure one of you will school me :)

Re: +/- OPK Question

  • Some OPKs actually say not to use FMU.  Some brands say FMU is okay.  I would read the instructions of whatever brand you're using.  It could be that FMU is too concentrated and may be giving you false positives.

  • I agree with PP, usually you're not supposed to use FMU with OPK's. Since you're getting positives only in the a.m. and not in the p.m. then it does seem like you're getting false positives due to the more highly concentrated urine in the a.m. It is good to test twice a day if you have short LH surges (otherwise you may miss them) but the tests I used recommended testing between 2-8 p.m.

  • Yep, I would say check the directions that came with the kit.  The ones I used said any time of day, but no drinking for 2+ hours prior to testing, so I used FMU.

  • Also, you know it's only positive if the test line is at least as dark as the control line, right? Just checking....

  • I always get negatives in the evenings, even when I get positives in the morning.  I'm assuming my urine is too diluted in the evenings, even though I hold my urine for a few hours before testing.  I just stopped testing in the evenings because it was misleading.  Although I'm clearly not pregnant yet, my + OPKs have always corresponded to CM etc and temps.

  • I would always use FMU (unless the directions say not to) because most tests only react to concentrated urine, when you haven't used the bathroom in 4+ hours.  I don't know about you, but I use the bathroom almost every hour.  You are probably getting a negative in the afternoon because your urine is more diluted.  Every time, I use my OPK, I am only positive one morning.  It is negative every time I take it, even the net morning after I get a positive.
