I'm only 5 weeks, but I found this amazing stroller (super expensive) on craigslist for half the price it would be if I bought it new. I don't want to jinx myself by buying a bunch of things already, but it really is a good deal. Just wondered how soon you started buying the big ticket items?
Re: Too soon to buy a stroller?
Have you test-driven it in a store? I would do that first. DH & I went on a "fact-finding mission" last week to Babies R Us to help us with budgeting. And there were some items that what I originally thought I wanted, because they were the items/brand my friends got when they initially registered for their baby, but I found out that I liked other brands/styles better.
We've started buying big-ticket items because we're budgeting for them to spread them out. I bought my breast pump this month, new at a store, normally $300 I got it for $200 because they were having a sale and I also had a %-off coupon (and my insurance doesn't cover breast pumps unless baby is in the NICU after birth). We're buying our crib mattress ($300) in March.
Also note, we are ONLY buying those big-ticket items that we find either (a) not carried in the stores we're planning on registering in, or (b) cheaper than they will be with the completion discount. Otherwise we're just saving money to buy all the stuff we don't get from baby showers when we get the completion discount.
I wouldn't go crazy with baby stuff yet, but if you find a super deal on something you are 100% sure you want, I'd say it's okay to buy it. But make sure it's really what you want!
Are you sure you actually like the stroller? Have you tried it and asked other moms about it? Do you know which car seats it works with? Are you sure you won't be getting a stroller as a shower gift?
Personally I think 5w is pretty early to buy a stroller, but mainly because a stroller is such an essential item you want to be sure you're getting one that's really going to work well for you. Just because it's super expensive doesn't make it the greatest.
(read it. you know you want to.)

I personally would wait to buy stuff. People bought a few small items for us as gifts, but I have been holding off.
You'll have 9 months for another great deal to pop up- and it will! Also, you may change your mind 15 times over the next few months about what you want in a stroller. Test drive some in stores, talk to other parents about what to look for, and keep your eyes open at the malls/stores to see what you like and don't like about different strollers. You may find that even though this one was a great deal, x, y, or z storller would have been better b/c you like these or those features.
