Chiropractics

Does anyone have any experience with tricare prime and chiropractics?

Also, fwiw, I'm far enough away from my mtf that I got to pick any civilian provider in the network that I wanted. But, this is super brand new to me, I've never hadthat luxury before, and have only had it for a couple of months. Anyhoo... does that make referrals different?

Thanks, in advance, ladies!

Re: Chiropractics

  • Chiropractic care is not a Tricare benefit.

The only time you can see a chiropractor without any expense is if there is one available at the nearest MTF willing to treat you.

  • Chiropractors are not covered unless your doc says you need it.  I pay $30 a visit to see my chiropractor.

  • Okay, thanks!! If my doctor thinks that's what will help my back pain (caused by a fall) then I'm willing to pay $30 or whatever to go do it. This pain cannot go on!!

  • I have been told only service members could POSSIBLY get chiropractor appointments covered. And with a quick google, it proves possibly right.

  • My MW was going to refer me to a chiropractor due to hip pain mid-pregnancy. With the referral it would've been covered... And it would've been a chiropractor out in town because the naval hospital chiro was mainly for the service member itself.

I would ask your doctor about it and if he gives you a referral call the chiropractor your referred to and ask how they've handled cases with Tricare Prime. They might be able to tell you whether its covered, and if its not you'll be more prepared for the cost.

Right. Only if the chiropractor is at an MTF.

That link says they can be seen at MTFs if available...which is what I said.  I'm confused?

If you are a service member, you can utilize a program that offers  chiropractic care at certain MTF. If you are not a SM then you cannot. Chiropractors are not covered under TRICARE except for that one exception.

IDK if the OP is a SM or not. And didn't she say she was far away from a MTF so she must be Prime Remote. It would make sense that she isn't a SM unless on recruiting duty. And if that is the case then she would be wasting money by driving all the way out to the nearest MTF (which possibly doesn't even off that special program).

I see.  I worked in Tricare and Referral Management at 4 different MTFs over the last 11 years so I've seen this question come up a lot.  I know it can be difficult to be seen even at that bases that offer it, unfortunately.

  • Maybe ask to see a family practice doctor that is a D.O.  They have been trained in osteopathic medicine and can do manipulative medicine similar to a chiropractor but they are also actual doctors. There are lots of D.O.s in the military and you may not even know you are being seen by a D.O. sometimes. But some of them could really help you.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice and the links.

FWIW - I'm not the SM. And we're also not on remote. We're stationed at Fort Bragg, but live in a town that is far enough away that they let me and DD choose our own civilian provider out in town. But, we were not changed to Prime Remote, we're still just on Prime. Thus my confusion over the whole thing.
