Girls like race cars too, ya know (vent)

I'm getting so irritated with certain characters being geared only towards boys.  DD loves Lightning McQueen.  Like, she's obsessed with him.  She sleeps with a McQueen pillow pet, drinks out of McQueen cups, she has several McQueen cars that she plays with, even has a McQueen backpack that she takes to preschool.  Several of her friends have told her "That's for boys!!" when they see her backpack, but it doesn't bother her, she still loves it.  Well now she's discovered some McQueen light up shoes that a boy in her class has and every day she tells me how much she wants a pair like his.  But obviously they're boy shoes.  I've looked everywhere and online and can't find any girl shoes with McQueen on them.  She's also seen some McQueen underwear at Target that she really wanted, but again they were for boys so we didn't get them because I didn't think they would fit her right (I figured the cut would be different?).  But I'm considering getting her the McQueen shoes for boys.  Would that be weird?

  • Not at all.  I've shopped for DD in the boys' section plenty of times, especially for sports stuff.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy DD "boys'" shoes if she wanted them.  I have to admit to a bias though where I might hesitate to buy DS glittery mary janes.  But of course right now, he has dressed up with DD and has on earrings and a necklace.  Big Smile

  • I don't think it would be weird.  DD has also worn boys' underoos.  Her BFF before we moved was a boy, and twice she had accidents at his house when I wasn't prepared.  She came home in his underoos, and my friend told me to keep them because she was pretty sure her son would never potty train :)  They were my favorites because she was so stinkin' cute in the Oscar and Big Bird underwear.  They were a little roomier in the crotch, and a little snugger around the waste, but totally fine and comfy for her.  It was a nice change of pace to see something less girly on her.  I get a little tired of princesses, pink, Zoe and Minnie Mouse.  DD's not really girly- not a total tomboy, but she doesn't watch tv or movies so she just isn't programed for that stuff, but there aren't a lot of less-girly options.

  • Isn't it funny how everyone else has imposed ideas of what a certain gender should like? My ds is as boyish as they come, but if he gets to pick from treasure box at school and there's a princess wand in the box, it's his. Every. Single. Time.

We are doing a construction themed bday party for ds next weekend. I told dh I was giving out mini Caterpillar machines as their goody bag item and dh wanted to know what I was going to give the girls.  Um...the same thing.

I'd get her the shoes and the underwear.

  • For about two years, my DD was obsessed with Ernie from Sesame Street. We had quite a few boy's shirts. I almost bought her the boy underwear, too, but didn't for the same reasons you said. If she likes the shoes, get them!

  • I would totally put DD in these image from the Disney store, if she were into it.  I have a VERY girly girl though.

Or these...don't know where they are from though image

  • The whole thing is just so funny to us because she is typically very girly.  She loooves to dress up in her princess stuff and have tea parties and play mommy to her babies.  She's so girly and prissy.  But she just loves Lighning McQueen.  We have a great picture of her playing outside, where she's decked out in princess attire (pretend heels, princess dress, jewelry, tiara, etc) in one hand she holds her princess wand and in the other hand she holds her racecar, lol.  It makes me laugh.

  • I like those first pair of shoes. My dds would wear those. They have a couple pairs of diego boys underwear. They fit fine but they have other favorites they wear more. It's not just cars2.  I wish we could see more girl clothes with cars/race flags/trucks etc.

  • I would definitely get her the shoes!   DD has a Lightning McQueen lunchbox too...and I find that she gravitates way more to the "boy" toys than the girls.  I'm just glad that she isn't on the "all princess, all the time" kick and I'm glad she just picks what she likes.  Definitely don't discourage her....chances are, like it or not, she will eventually start picking what everyone else likes/has/wants. Enjoy it now while she's rocking what she likes and always try to instill that fire in her so she can try to do it as much as she'd like in the future.  Now go get the shoes!  :)

  • I don't have gilrls, but if I did I am sure I would have this problem in my house ; ) But my middle son's favorite color is purple (sometimes pink), and it is really hard to find things remotely boyish in those colors. He is not into princesses though or girly things, just the colors. So for christmas last year we got him a puple hippo pillow pet that he loves. I considered getting him a purple scooter, but it was a light purple and figured he may outgrow the color thing (he loved the red one he got him that matches his bike).

  • I think with pants it would be fine!!  We have two boys and I have thought about this kind of stuff if we would have had a girl.  We are BIG into sports, but all the cute sports stuff out there is geared towards boys.  I'm not big into all the cats, princesses etc on girls stuff (though I suppose I might feel different if I had a girl)
  • When DD was 3, she went through a Diego phase (not Dora).  We gave her a Diego birthday party 3rd birthday party at a bounce hot.   She got a lot of Diego toys which works out because we had 2 boys also.  That I know of no one gave her a hard time but the phase was still short lived, once she was into the princesses, she kissed Diego good-bye.  Not sure what role peer influence had on it.

I'd buy the shoes but I would have her try them on first, as they may have a different fit (therefore don't purchase them online).   I thought Wal-Mart had girl car shoes at one time.  I'd do some internet searches

  • Yeah we definitely don't try to persuade her either way.  She likes what she likes, and that's typically what we go with when it comes to toys/backpacks/whatever.  Hence why she has so much mcqueen stuff!  I showed her the shoes this morning and she said no, because she wants the ones that light up, lol.  Maybe we'll make a trip to target or walmart later and see if they have some that light up, and see how they fit her.

  • FWIW, my DD was the same way with Toy Story, and I couldn't find cute girl TS stuff anywhere. I ended up buying her boys TS underwear because she really wanted them. Honestly, I thought they were cuter on her than her regular underwear. I don't see the issue with it, but my mom was horrified that I would buy her boy underwear.

I have no problem getting her boy shoes, if I can't find a girly pair.

ETA: You do have to be careful with the underwear though, because I bought 2 different brands in the same size, one pack fit perfectly, but the other pack was huge. Super huge!

I can check and tell you the brands later (DS is sleeping and they are in his dresser now), if you want. I bought all of ours at Target too.

  • I haven't seen them in a while, but bought DD some Pixar girls underwear from Target that had Jessie, Nemo, Wall*E, and Cars (which are pink, w/ McQueen on them, very cute).  This was probably last spring?

DD was really, really into Toy Story too, especially Woody (she was Woody for Halloween, and DD2 was Buzz) and she has several boys t-shirts and pj's with Toy Story stuff, since I couldn't find girls ones, other than a few with just Jessie.  I try really hard not to overload on girly stuff, but she's really gravitated towards it recently (we're in princess overload.)  DH blames preschool.

  • My DD's BFF (a girl) looooovves Lightening McQueen and has the backpack and the sneakers. I just asked DD if LMcQ was for boys or girls and she said "It's for boys and girls".

I say buy anything she wants!

You inspired me to ask DD that same question and she said "McQueen's for girls!"  lol  I asked her who princesses were for, and she said girls.  I asked her who spiderman is for, and she said boys.  I asked her again who is McQueen for and she said "Girls!!" haha

  • We have this issue at our house.  Harm has learned in school gender rolls so he oft excludes Rach from the games and toys like Thomas.  He has the wrong femanist mom to pull that crap!!!

  • Iron-on transfers.

A couple bucks, some plain white undies and a few minutes at the iron and she could have the panties of her dreams.

I have the same problem with DS. He LOVES Dora. Deigo is ok, Dora is his one true love. And I avoid the shoe section of stores so he won't fall in love with those purple sparkly shoes again... I just can't seem to do it. He does however have Dora sippies and a blue Dora shirt (which is still obviously girly, but whatever).

  • My DD is also totally obsessed with Cars and Lightning McQueen. LOVES it and would probably watch the movie all day, every day if she could.

One thing I found for her at Target are super cute Lightning McQueen slippers. She loves them and wears them around the house constantly. I haven't seen shoes, but might have to start looking for them. I'm pretty sure she'd wear them every day!

  • I would get them. Dd is currently wearing a pair of green shoes from stride rite that came from the boy side. The worker even showed her girl shoes saying that those were for princesses. Dd said No, I want green! And the guy turns to me and asks if I want her to try on the pink ones instead. Um, no, get the green.

She also loves her car slide and Thomas trains. I can't wait to see her grow up, she's a fun girl!

  • Absolutely buy her the shoes :) I have felt the same frustration only with DS. He loves Dora but all Dora stuff is geared toward girls! Like boys have to like Diego instead.

  • I love this post!

DS and I were at Macys yesterday getting a new pair of rain boots - they had navy blue, green, black/red, and pink.  Of course DS wants the pink ones...I didn't make a big deal about it, just told him that I wasn't going to buy him the pink ones, he chose the green, we moved on and haven't heard a word about it since.

However, I definitely feel a bit guilty about it.  I have rationalized it by telling myself that I would've done the same thing if he had wanted the black/red ones because I just didn't like them as much, but I still feel badly for propagating the gender stereotype!

  • Well we went shopping this weekend and DD fell in love with these

     image

I think they're hideous, and they make me laugh every time I see them.  But she absolutely adores these shoes.  We had a hard time getting them off of her last night to get in the bath, and this morning as soon as she woke up I went to get her out of her room and she had already put them on herself, lol.  She loves them.
