Opinions on daycares/preschools that interview kids and parents...

Is it a good thing if a daycare/preschool observes the child and interviews the parents before deciding if the child will be allowed to enroll there bc it shows they really take it seriously or do you think it is a bad thing.....no diversity, too competitive, etc.

I'm personally not a fan....it would be an automatic turn off to me, but I have friends who think of it as a bonus.

  • My dd goes to a catholic prek-8th grade school.  We had to enroll her and prove that she was in check with health records.  We did not have to interview or anything.

  • I don't mind a little informal "interview"/meeting where the size up the child's abilities so that they can place the child with a teacher they think will be a good fit.  But, anything more than that would turn me off.
  • I think it's too competitive too early.
  • There are preschools that do that??

  • I would never choose a preschool that is so acedemically focused that they have to interview the kids to see if they fit.  There is plenty of time for that.  And I have read that kids that go to these types of schools wind up more stressed about school and like school less than other kids by the time they are 6.

  • I don't know. I had to "interview" to get into my Kindergarten (started when Iwas 4, interviewed at 3)...a lot of pre-schools here do it, especially private ones that are affiliated with older grades. Since they assume you will stay in the school through the following years they interview you. Not a big deal IMO.

  • I think that is a bit much.  I don't have a problem with them meeting them to determine which class is the best fit, but if they chose to deny enrollment after meeting them then I have an issue with it.  Gosh, let them be kids and have a little fun!

  • that's kind of sad!  What are these?  Some sort of Ivy League preschools, like Princeton for Tots.
  • I think it is highly regional (bostom nestie doesn't find it odd) and very social class based...  I think of it as the new-wealth yuppie parents who honestly want the best for their kids and in the social structures they belong to it's "what you do"....  We all have cultural pressures.
