Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Nursing someone else's baby.

Do you think this is odd... ?

I moved to a new town about an hour away from "home" just before getting married (it's been about a year and a half now). So, I don't have many friends here at all. ?While in a "child preparation" class I met a nice woman that was my age and due right around when I was due and we really hit it off. ?She had her baby girl 2 weeks before I had DS. ?We visited each other in the hospital and try and get together with babies about once a week. ?

I've been using a nipple shield since DS was born - I don't have a problem with it but would like to eventually wean off. ?She also had to use one at first and successfully weaned recently. ?While we were both feeding sitting next to each other on the couch, she was trying to help me with NOT using the shield, giving me tips, showing me different holds, and being very supportive. ?

She said that her DD didn't do the things that my DS was doing - he would suck for a few sucks and then get mad and pull off gagging. ?Anyway, she casually said this to me:

"I'm half tempted to try him on me to see if he does the same thing."

I just sort of ignored it and put the shield back on and finished feeding DS. ?I've heard about women that switch/share nursing their babies, I'm not comfortable with it though. ?

Do you think it's odd that she said that? ?If she says it again, what should I say? ?Have you ever done it? ?I really do like her and would like to continue getting together.

TIA:)?

Re: Nursing someone else's baby.

  • I'm 99% sure that she was just commenting, since you breezed right by it I would be surprised if she said anything again.  If she does, just mention that you aren't sure your comfortable with it.  Just be honest, there's no reason for a little comment to ruin a good mommy-friend.

  • That would probably have creeped the hell out of me too.  I'm hoping it was one of those said it before she thought of how it sounded moments where she just wanted to know if it's maybe just the shape of your nipples or whatever that are bothering him.

But it would not have sat well with me.

  • If it did happen to come up again, I think you could be honest and just be like "ack! that would weird me out" and be friendly about it. As long as you are clear you aren't weird out by HER, I think you could be honest about it. Does she want you to nurse her DD? Probably not. It sounds like she was just a bit over-passionate about improving your nursing situation.

  • It is weird.  She probably just wasn't thinking.  I would just kind of laugh it off if she says anything again or tell her you're not into that sort of thing.
  • It sounds like something i would say but didn't mean! (i always don't think about how it sounds like till too late, specially if its something that i am really focused on......)

Im sure you can just tell her "no its okay, i think that would be odd" and move on....Its cool to have mommy buddies, i wish i had one!  :)
