Tongue tied babies?

Have a baby who is "tongue tied?" Mine is...it runs in my family. At birth, the pedi said it is no big deal-it doesn't cause speech problems, doesn't hinder eating, or any other function. I can attest to this, as I am tied as well. DS is well-fed and is a very happy baby. I went to a new dentist today and he lectured, yes, lectured, me on why I should have mine fixed and shoudl have DS's fixed immediately. He tells me it causes problems with speech and eating...um...not for me or anyone in my family! I have zero problems with either function. So...I guess I'm pretty annoyed with this NEW dentist. Have you ever been given advice from a doctor? What was it?

Re: Tongue tied babies?

  • My daughter was tongue tied, the only reason we found out was because I tried to breastfeed and she could not suck right, she lached on just could not move her tongue correctly, I pumped for 4 weeks then gave up b/c she just could not breastfeed and I was not producing milk, at 5 months we had her evaluated at a speech therapist and she recommnded we do it before she started talking b/c it would cause problems, Luckly I have a friend who is an oral surgeron who clipped her in the office at 5 months and she did great, i could not go back to breastfeeding b/c my milk had dried up whatever was there in the first place but her drooling slowed down she was a drowl bucket.

The lactation consultant told me in the hospital that she would not be able to feed on a bottle either, but that was not true, my Ped was not concerned except for speech as she got older, so we decided to have her evaluated.

Personally I would get it fixed b/c as they get older if he starts to have problems they will have to put him asleep to fix it my DD was awake during hers and it lasted 5 seconds to get clipped, the DR (oral surgeon) told me not to wait b/c it becomes a bigger production the longer you go, since she was only 5 months the skin was not fully formed yet.  Also I so believe speech is affected but the child may be able to adjust but still might have problems with certain sounds.  That was what i was told.

If you have any other questions let me know

BTW I think I am togue tied too b/c I can not stick my togue out far and when I do it hurts, I have no speech problems but I can not roll my RRRs Spanish class was sooooo much fun when I was younger, BLAH.

  • Ethan is slightly tongue tied, and we discussed clipping it, but my pedi suggested we wait a bit and see if he starts to try to stick his tongue out. So I frequently can be seen sticking my tongue out at my baby... and he does it, too.
He actually has a short frenulum and there is very little to clip, so we will not treat. He might need speech therapy, but since he can stick his tongue out, I think he will be fine.

  • Jasper was tongue tied (upper lip and under tongue) but was a level four or "posterior" tie which means it was attached much farther back and easy to miss. We had it clipped because he was so colicky and gassy and this type of tongue tie can cause problems handling the flow of milk. It did help his latch a lot and I noticed instant improvement in his tongue mobility.

We had it done by the dr. who wrote this article on tongue ties  https://www.aap.org/breastfeeding/8-27%20newsletter.pdf for the American Association of Pediatrics.
