If you're going from BFing to sippies/straw cups

Are you having a hard time getting LO to drink a significant amount of WCM at once, as they would if you were nursing them?

I feel like I'm going to be BFing forever at this rate b/c he  is just not drinking enough milk out of the sippy per day. He treats it like he's drinking water & takes a few sips at a time & that's it. The most he's drank in one day is maybe 6 oz total, and this is via offering it to him a million times a day.

eta- I just wanted to specify that I'm talking about going from boob to sippy & not BM in a bottle to sippy.

  • I'm not BFing but we're having a similar issue. H will suck down water out of her straw cup no problem, but give her milk and she takes a couple sips and then puts it down.

We've gone back to a gradual intro mixing formula and WCM in her bottle, but I'm scared when we do finally get her on 100% milk she still won't want it from a straw cup because she associates that with water only. Stick out tongue

  • Oh yeah.  He will not drink WCM from a sippy or even a bottle.  I've mixed it with BM, water, even put all BM in a sippy.  Doesn't want it.  But he'll chug water out of a sippy no problem.  I ended up cutting out my 2 daytime feedings anyway and I'm still offering the milk but he just pushes it away. I asked my pedi about this and she didn't seem overly concerned since he's also eating yogurt, cottage cheese and other dairy.

I guess bottom line is, I got rid of my daytime BF sessions even though he won't really drink WCM.  Still BFing first thing in the AM and for bed.

No real advice but good luck!

  • I'm having the same problem. I would like to stop BFing, but I don't see that happening if I just go from nursing to sippy cups. So, I reluctantly have started giving her some WCM in a bottle, and we'll just have to wean off the bottle later. Ugh.

  • Yup. I'm not overly concerned because I asked my Pedi for minimum daily intake and she didn't really give a specific number and said as long as he was eating other dairy that it was okay. I just keep offering it, some days he'll drink more than others, and sometimes he'll sit and drink if I rock him before his nap. We only nurse early morning and at bedtime (which is getting shorter so I won't be surprised if that one gets dropped soon) so I'll just do my best to get him to drink more milk and if it's still a big issue at his 15-month appt. I'll ask the Pedi for suggestions.

  • Same problem here too and it's SO frustrating. She wont take BM or WCM from a sippy. I cut out her daytime feedings and nothing has changed. Her pedi said as long as I'm still nursing at night and in the morning it's fine. I still offer milk at every meal but she won't touch it. I even tried to go back to bottles but she won't even take BM out of it now. She drinks tons of water but won't even take a sip of milk. I had no idea this transition would be so hard!

  • DS doesn't take much of anything from a sippy or cup. So he takes a bottle of WCM at daycare and on the weekend he just doesn't drink as much (I don't want to give him a bottle myself...want him to learn the cup!)

  • Good to know your pedi's didn't seem too concerned. When I asked how much milk he should be getting, our pedi just said 4xs a day, lol- not very specific!

I am nursing morning & night & once before morning nap. I hope to end that one soon, but it makes him sleepy, so that's going to suck not having that, lol.

What's frustrating is he likes WCM, (he says mmMMMmmm! after taking a swig), but just won't drink a lot in one sitting.

    GL to us all! haha

  • Same for us.  He will sip it at meals, but barely gets any down.  I think he likes it just fine, he's just not used to drinking a lot except from the boob I guess.

I'm actually in no hurry to wean him so I'm not really worried, but I'm wondering how the transition will go once I do decide to wean.  :(

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • DD was like this for awhile too and then magically in the last week or so she's drank significant amounts of WCM at meals, and the last 2 nights she's actually finished a whole 6 oz cup.  I promise I didn't do anything different just kept offering it to her.

  • Don't sweat it too much. Just make sure you're giving enough calcium rich foods like yogurt and cheese.

  • I think this is normal. L was drinking a full sippy at breakfast time before, but in the past 2 weeks nothing has changed with the food he is eating, but he has gone down to just a few sips of milk instead. He'll drink almost a full sippy for a snack, but nowhere near a full sippy at meals.
