Valley Hospital: Post Partum experience after C Section

I had a baby at valley in ridgewood and my experience was not the best. Am due in a few months months and my doc only practices at valley so I have no choice but to go back there. I'll have a repeat c section. I love my doc otherwise I would have switched hospitals. Am really hoping to hear some positive experinces just so I can be encouraged.

Some of my questions are:

  • How soon after delivery did  you get to meet with the lactation consultant? She finally met with me a few minutes before I was discharged. I called a few times and was told she works 9-5p. I could have used more help.
  • How soon after the c section did they stop the IV and remove foley catheter? I was told they had to wait 24hrs and so I didnt get to see my baby for over 24hrs after delivery (was in NICU).
  • I had a private room on the Bergen side and the nurses were not particularly warm. I was there for 3 days and had the same two nurses. Where did you stay?
  • Also curious what days of the week you were there. Am not sure if it makes a difference but I was there on a weekend.

Sorry for the long post. Really hoping to get some input.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Valley Hospital: Post Partum experience after C Section

  • FTP, I can't help with any of your questions.  I was told my Dr practiced at Valley and HUMC.  During an interview with my DH he told us he just practices at Valley now.  I was upset at first but choose to stay with the Dr.  Its much better than some of the hospitals I've seen in the area.  I started taking classes (I'm in my 2nd trimester) at the hospital and other locations.  The classes are very informative.  I don't expect I'll learn anything in the hospital during my stay or that I'll need it.  So far I'm impressed with Valley and all I hope for is a H & H baby, I don't care how I'm treated, etc.
  • I made the choice to find an OB that delivers at Valley simply because two friends of mine had great experiences delivering there.  One of my friends had a c-section there and had a good experience.  I want to say that she might have said something about the nurses not being that friendly but my other friend said they were very friendly.  I guess it all depends on who you get?

  • Thanks for the responses! I also posted this on the New Jersey Nesties board and got many responses. If you are interested you can stop by there and check them out. Thanks again.

  • I delivered my son there two years ago (vaginal birth) so the questions regarding C-sections I can't really help you out with those.  I loved all the nurses, except one in L&D (and i just felt I wasn't getting that much attention) and two stayed after their shift to see if we were having a a boy or a girl (we were team green).

Overall I would say it was a positive experience, I was at the other wing (non-Bergen) and delivered on a Saturday night... I am sure how busy they are does effect some quality of the care.  The lactation specialist stopped by the day after birth (i delivered at 11 pm) as well as the following day and did respond left a voicemail.

A quick FYI if you don't get along with a nurse or just don't get along personailty wise, feel free to request a change... this was a point that was mentioned during our hospital tour.  If something upsets you speak up.  There was a problem with my monitor before I gave birth, they had to come in several times and switch monitors and the next day one of the staff apologized for the inconvience and gave me a amex gift card (and I didn't complain).
