Cloth Diapering

question re: CD boy issue

This morning my 14-month-old started fussing and reaching at his diaper (an hour after I changed him out of a very wet overnight diaper).  When I opened up the diaper, the tip of his penis (sorry if too graphic) looked really sore and I think there's a little blister!  He seems like he's in pain, and I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

A few weeks ago a similar thing happened where it was more red and sore, and got better after I switched to disposable for a day or so.

I change his diaper very frequently (rarely longer than 2 hours) except for overnight...which might be causing the problem.  I'm planning to keep Aquaphor on it today and use some disposables, but I wish I knew a way to fix the issue without having to stop CD for a few days at a time.  TIA!

Re: question re: CD boy issue

  • DS got a little chaffing on the head of his penis because we were flippin our inserts in instead of out and the diaper was a little loose on him.  We just let him air dry for an hour or so.  We didn't use cream or anything.  Just keep an eye of it.

  • DS got the same "blister" on the tip/side of this penis. A combo of putting him in prefolds w/wool cover (airflow), and keeping the effected area clean helped a lot. He complained (a lot) during diaper changes, but after closely inspecting the area I noticed a bit of debris in the "folds" of his skin, which might have been adding to the problem.

It took a while for the sore to go away (probably about 2-3 weeks) but we even took him to the doctor for it and he said there wasn't anything to be done but give it air and time.

  • we ended up only cloth during day and using a disposable at night once our boy was around 18mo and seemed irritated. they have great overnight extra absorbant cloth diapers (superundies overnights) we used for our daugter but never tried on our son since oir daughter still is a bedwetter and needs them more. sorrynot to helpful.

  • I know my son had issues with microfiber and I know a few other moms with sons that have issues with microfiber too.
