Makes sense to me. They gave our kids sugar water (I think they called it sweeties) on the pacifier whenever they had to do heel sticks or change IV sites. A had to have a PICC put in as well at one point, and they did it again at that time. It really did seem to help.
They were also big proponents of kangaroo care. I was able to touch them right away. As soon as they were stable enough at 3 days old, I was finally allowed to start holding them for about 30 minutes at a time. Gradually that worked up to an hour at a time. DH was encouraged to kangaroo often as well. It was the one thing other than pumping that we could do for them. We felt so helpless sometimes otherwise.
