Parenting after a Loss

How Much DId Your NB Sleep?

Our LO slept a LOT due to jaundice, at the beginning. Jaundice is nearly gone after UV treatment and lots of nursing. But he still sleeps SO much.

I know that newborns sleep a lot. LO is on his 16th day today. He is awake for a couple of hours per day/night, it seems, and no more. I try to keep him awake for a while, read to him, play with him, talk with him - but nope.

I've done reading on all of this - but I wanted to know what happened with your LO, in reality. THanks so much.

Re: How Much DId Your NB Sleep?

  • Not much at all honestly. Even in the supposed "sleepy" phase I was lucky if she would sleep for an hour at a time.

  • Sounds about right to me. Lo slept about 20 hours a day the first few weeks and gradually began staying awake longer.

  • Until about 4 wks my DS was alert for about 2 and occasionally 3 hrs. NBs sleep a lot but it doesn't last too long. Enjoy the downtime!

  • He slept a lot the first month during the day.  I would say if you added all of his awake time up during the day it would only equal an hour or two.  At night he woke up every hour or so wanting to eat, and then would fall back asleep.

  • Don't keep her up, he needs sleep and you should take advantage while you can! DD slept about 20 hours a day back then. Now I'm lucky if she sleeps ten and they all have to be on/right next to me.

  • A ton. I'd say I noticed a change when he was about 4-5w old.

I was always so worried at how much he slept. He was sleeping at least 20 hours a day in the first few weeks. He also battled a little jaundice (no UV treatments though).

Enjoy it while you can! Smile

  • He sleeps pretty much all the time.   Only wakes to eat and that is about it.   Every once in a while he will decide to be alert for an hour or so but that doesn't happen every day.

This. His awake times as a newborn were longer than his awake times now. It wouldn't be uncommon for him to awake for 3-4 hours straight.
