Crib bumpers

So after all the bumper debates (early on) made me want to research it more. According to the  JPMA and CPSC between the years 1985 and 2005 there has only been 27 reported crib deaths. Most of which have not been due to bumpers alone. I also looked it up on the federal law enforcement of consumer products death investigation and most cases were deemed to be staged. Also most deaths were due to plastic bumpers and bumpers that were too thick or loose. There was also a lawsuit filled by a few companies against "breathable" bumpers for slander and false information.I'm not saying either is better then the other just information.

Re: Crib bumpers

  • This is interesting. I haven't had LO sleep in her crib yet but I let her play in there and I have the bumpers on still. I will probably leave them up when I do transition her (who knows when that will be). Unless she is starting to pull herself up by then. In that case I will probably take them down since she will just trample them anyway.

  • We have used our bumpers since day 1 of Ty in his crib (5 days old) and haven't had any issues. scares, etc.  I tried taking them out once when I needed to remove them to elevate the mattress and he wanted nothing to do with sleep when I did that.  We put them back and fast asleep he went, no complaints!

I will re-evaluate removing them soon, once he starts sitting up in his crib.  I don't want him using them as leverage to pull himself up at all, but once we move his crib down that may not really be an issue!

    We'll see.

  • We never put a thick bumper in, but have a breatheable one.  So far LO stays put at night, so the bumper maybe isn't needed, but once she can stand up that thing is coming out.

  • I have the regular bumpers in DS's crib. I have them pulled down so there's only about 3-4 inches of bumper. I'm not worried.

  • I made my own for LO. They are very thin though. It's funny DS takes them and pushes the down so it's folded in half and uses it as a pillow. It's adorable. He doesn't always do it. The fabric on the inside is a soft velvet and he lives scratching at it too. It's definitely a comfort thing to him
