Too many ultra sounds in short time?

I like my doctor but haven't known him long and have heard rave reviews about a different Dr.

Id like to meet both and decide from there. I made an appointment with my Dr. for the 19nth at 8 weeks and when I called the other DR. they gave me the 11nth at 7 weeks.

My question is if I get an exam and ultrasound from both drs, will insurance charge me for an extra ultrasound. I have a good insurance, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Sheild. If they cover it Id love to take advantage of ultrasounds at both apoitments.

TIA

  • You need to call and ask your insurance that question.

ETA: I hope that wasn't snarky.  It's just that every insurance plan is so different.  There is no way we can tell you.

  • Most insurances only cover 2 ultrasounds per pregnancy. Others have to meet medical necessity.

  • well i've heard of people getting ultrasounds at 6 and 8 weeks...so i wondering if insurance ever gave those specific people a hard time...I can call company tomorrow. I just was curious now.

  • You will have to pay for one appt out of pocket.  Insurance will not cover 2 new OB appts w/ U/S.  The 1st appt (U/S, bloodwork, etc) could run a few hundred)

If you like your dr start your OB visits with him and if you decided a few weeks in to switch you can send your records to the new dr

those  are usually medically necessary.  I had U/S at 7w, 8w and 9w due to a blood clot...but it was with the same OB

  • Just be aware that the difference in baby from 7 weeks to 8 weeks (especially at 9 weeks) can be pretty huge.  It is exciting to go early, but just keep that fact in mind!  GL with your choice of doc!
