moving to Miami - family friendly places to live?

Hi, my husband will probably be taking a (non clinical) job at Miami Children's Hospital.  We know NOTHING about Miami at all.  Where are some areas/neighborhoods that are family friendly that we could consider?  We will have a kindergartener and a 2 year old when school starts.  I won't have a job right away so we will have to keep budget in mind. I would also appreciate advice on how the schools are rated and how to learn about which schools are good. I would also like to know if there are neighborhoods where great families live but maybe send their kids to private school instead of the local public school. thanks so much for any advice!

Re: moving to Miami - family friendly places to live?

  • Miami Children's is a great hospital.  It is located in Coral Gables, which is a very nice (ritzy) neighborhood.  Not sure what public schools are in that area, but a few options for private schools.  Pinecrest is a bit further south, and is another very nice neighborhood.  Both are established and are family friendly.

Miami is very big, and has a lot of school choices, public, charter, private.  Perhaps some of the teachers on the board can help with narrowing things down.  If you choose private, most private schools are affilited with a religion.

  • Miami Children's Hospital is located either adjacently or in the Schenley Park neighborhood (not sure exactly). I actually live there so I may be biased, but it's a great place to live. Technically, it's a block away from Coral Gables so you enjoy living in a Coral Gables-ish area without paying the high property taxes. Lots of young families live around here. There's a really nice arts festival yearly that is sponsored by the neighborhood and a great Halloween block party for the kids.

  • I agree with Schenley Park - great area! West Miami is right next to Schenley and is also a great area - very family oriented! West Miami has a public school which is considered an "A" school (Sylvania Heights). There are many great private schools/daycares in the Coral Gables area. The Biltmore School, Granada Day School, KLA Schools, Pineview Preschools, Gables Montessori to name a few. There are also some Catholic Schools in the area.

  • I work at Miami Children's Hospital and we live in Westchester. It's not the greatest, but not that bad. We plan on moving soon - we live in my husband's grandfather's house (he passed away shortly after we were married; my husband was caring for him, so we just stayed put). We're not leaving b/c of anything bad, but because we are both from Broward and my family is up there and with 2 toddlers, I need help! But Schenley Park is nice and it's affordable. My daughter went to Granada Day School for daycare (as an infant) and I wasn't happy with the infant program, but their school is excellent. And it's close to MCH (hence having my daughter there, LOL). There is St. Theresa's school which is great, and the other schools that Laura mentioned. Pinecrest is exensive. We looked at houses and I don't think we found anything under $600k. One of my co-workers lives there and said traffic in the morning to MCH is a major pain! South Miami is a few blocks south of MCH. One of my supervising physicians has a beautiful house there and her daughter goes to St. Thomas private school. South Miami has a nice mixture of million dollar houses and affordable houses.

  • Like others have said, MCH is in Schenley Park which is a fantastic neighborhood. My mom lives there now just 2 blocks away. Homes are in the $300-500,000 range. I bought my house in the City of West Miami which is just a couple blocks north of Schenley. Its a tiny quiet city with a private police department, 3 different family friendly parks, and an A elemantary school. We LOVE it here. Very safe, I see the police drive by at least once a day. Homes are in the $200-$400,000 range.

South Miami is another great option but it tends to be kindof dark at night and I've always worried about safety because of its proximity to some bad areas although in recent years, South Miami has really cleaned up its less desirable areas.

  • This is wonderful! thank you so much!  You brought up some new areas that I hadn't heard of yet.  Thanks for the replies and information about schools!!
  • Schenley Park, Coral Gables, South Miami and West Miami are all GREAT, family-friendly neighborhoods right by MCH but none of them are exactly cheap. South Miami and West Miami are probably the more affordable options compared to the other two. Unfortunately the public school system in Miami is not the greatest, so a lot of families who can afford to do send their kids to private schools. Having said that, the area near the hospital probably has some of the better public schools in Miami.  There's Sylvania Heights in West Miami like Laura mentioned and there's also David Fairchild right in South Miami (bordering Coral Gables). Both are excellent elementary schools, as is Ponce Elementary in Coral Gables.

The point is that the hospital is in a great area with a lot of great neighborhoods and great schools, but the cost of living is high, so it's a trade off. There are other really nice areas in Miami that aren't quite as expensive but it would mean more of a commute for your husband and the public schools in those areas probably aren't as top tier.

  • Hi i live in florida put not in miami its Homestead,fl its not to far from miami childrens where i stay its ok the rent is low somewhat and schools are good my kids go to A school its a green school the love it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              image
  • We live in Country Walk (Kendall Area, near the zoo.)  It's not too close to MCH, but it's not that bad of a drive (20 min or so.)  The benefit, though, of living in Kendall, is that you can find less expensive homes, but great communities.  We'll be sending our daughters to private school (I'm hoping, at least!)  I'm a public school teacher and I will do everything in my power not to send them to a public school and have to deal with FCAT bs.
  • We live close to MCH and LOVE our neighborhood. David Fairchild is our district school.  It is a small public school with high parent involvement.  It feels more like a charter school.  Other nearby schools not mentioned - West Lab a Magnet School by the University of Miami and then there are two charter schools - Somerset South Miami (SoMi) and Somerset Gables.

  • Don't get scared off from Miami public schools, some aren't great but some are awesome. It's like any place really. Pinecrest elementary is one of the best. In Coral Gables, Sunset elementary has a language magnet program for Spanish, German or French. In Kendall, which is farther from MCH but very family friendly, Calusa elementary is an A school and Kendale Elementary is also great. If you're by FIU which is by westchester, Carlos Finlay Elementary has a dual language program ( half day in English, half Spanish) and there's no waiting list like for Sunset since it's not magnet.  Anyway, there are a lot of private and charter schools, but I can tell you from experience that having the words private or charter on a school's name doesn't automatically make it an excellent school. Some of the private schools have a worse teacher to student ratio than public schools and the programs aren't as good. Best of luck in your search :)

  • I would suggest Weston. Little bit of a commute but well worth it. We live in Plantation and husband commutes to Miami Airport. We really like Plantation and find it VERY family friendly. I work in Fort Lauderdale so Plantation is a good middle ground for us. Plus ...i like the open feeling of Plantation/Davie area. We have only been here 3 yrs. So right there with you on the whole "i know nothing about the area".

Work with a RE agent to find rentals.

  • We moved here after a lifetime (40+ years) in NYC and were not thinking about starting a  family. After living here for 2 years I was thinking I could entertain the possibility of raising a child here since it's so much more relaxed and laid back. (I couldn't imagine lugging a  stroller up and down the subways...and the crazy competitive public schools in Manhattan). But we live in a  condo downtown and it appears family-friendly. People have been great and I've made lots of friends through work and the community (esp LA Fitness ) . The Brickell area is up and coming and getting better all the time. It';s safer overall here than NYC (well I'm from the Bronx so my comparison may not be yours ;) LOL)  but we are very happy here and I have no qualms about raising a child here. I also work @ UM so I am on campus of UMH.
  • Hi! I feel your pain. My husband and I are moving to Miami in a month and we know nothing about the area (being relocated for his job.) Good luck in your search, I would hate to steer you in the wrong direction. When are you moving there?

  • You didn't mention the price range you are looking for. Although the Gables, South Miami, Schenley (SP?) Park and Pinecrest areas are WONDERFUL, they are VERY expensive. I also live in Country Walk (like BritishBride) and I love it!!!! Very quiet, peaceful, family oriented, best bang for your bucks as far as size of house and size of land you can get. Easy access to the turnpike which will get you anywhere in a flash.

     Good luck!
