Cloth Diapering

CD Basics?

Ok, so I'm looking into CDing our LO... I have no idea what all I will need, where to buy it etc... I know you need liners and covers, but everything I've read is so confusing... Can someone please take the time to dummy proof CDing for me!? I would really appreicate it... A list of what I will need, and the dos and donts of CD... Any other info you find relevant... Thanks in advance!

Re: CD Basics?

  • I'm not a CD pro, but I know the basics so I can help you out. I was really confused with all of the terms in the beginning as well.

There are prefold diapers where you fold the diaper onto your baby and use a snappi to hold it on. Then you use a waterproof cover over top of it. These are probably the type of cloth diaper that is the most work. Most people use these on newborns because they are less bulky, and fit newborns well. Although many people prefer these when they get older as well.

There are also pocket diapers. These have two layers that form a pocket. The outer is waterproof, and the inner is against the baby's skin that wicks the wetness away. In between you put inserts in which is the absorbent part. You can get microfiber inserts, or bamboo inserts. I use this type of cloth diaper, and we use microfiber inserts.

There are also all-in-ones (AIO). This is like a pocket diaper but the inserts are sewn into it, so they are not removable. This type of diaper is the most like a regular disposable.

If you have any other questions check out the FAQ's at the top of the board. I know even there a lot of the info isn't 100% clear, but once you know the basics you can figure out the rest of what they are saying.

  • I also reccommend trying to find a store in your area that sells cd's. For me, I had to see/hold them to figure out what I wanted.
