High-Risk Pregnancy

Newly Pregnant w/ HighBloodPress & Pre-Diabetic

Hello! Well, I normally post on Infertility, I JUST found out that I am pregnant, I haven't even had an actual appointment with my doctor yet, just had blood tests and a call after. However, I have very High Blood Pressures and am Pre-Diabetic w/ really high blood sugars, and I'm so scared how this is going to effect my pregnancy and what to expect. Any responses would be really appreciated.

  • Congrats! I am also in the pre diabetic range, and I am going in Monday morning for the 1 hour glucose test to see if there's anything I need to worry about right now. I was told to stop my BP medication, since it wasn't the safest for pregnancy, just to see how I did. So far so good but I'm going to see a special doc in January to be put on something just to be safe.

  • Thank you! And I'm not sure why I haven't been diagnosed Diabetic because my blood sugars run 200-220+ after meals even being on 2500MG Metformin a day, sometimes I think my family doctor is a joke so I really should see a Diabetic specialist. And unfortunately stopping my BP meds isn't an option, without it I can run 180/160 =/ so it really worries me. I take Methyldopa for my BP and have been told it's safe for pregnancy (well as safe as it gets) but all that really scares me that carrying a baby will be hard :(

  • Hi there! Im not pre-diabetic but I have pre pregnancy chronic hypertension. What my MFM and OB did was monitor my bp by having me come in every 2 weeks and I didnt have to go onto bp meds until about 26/27 weeks. Since then, Ive recieved even more monitoring, and started my NSTs (stress tests) twice weekly at 32 weeks. The plan is to induce me at 37, if I make it there without showing signs of severe IUGR and Pre-E.

Also, there are studies that show you can lower your risk of Pre-E by eating 80 grams or more protein a day.

As hard as it is to do, take a deep breath, talk with your doctor about your history and see where you go from there.

I think you're right.  Your family doctor is a joke.  With numbers that high, you are diabetic (I am too).  Your doctor should have worked with you to get this under control while TTC.  You need to see a specialist right away, and will probably need to take insulin.  I know it sounds scary, but trust me, it is not a huge deal and you will get used to it.  You need to have very tight control of your sugars during pregnancy.  With insulin, this will be so much easier.

As for the HPB, luckily methyldopa is one of the drugs that is safe for pregnancy.  I take labetalol because methyldopa knocked me OUT all the time.

Look, I am diabetic with HBP too and I am having no trouble carrying this baby, and neither will you.  You just need some help and guidance from a good doctor!  Please try to see a specialist this week.  :-)

  • I have no idea about the diabetic stuff but I have regular high blood pressure and when I got pregnant I voiced my concerns to my doctor and he shrugged them off and said that the pregnancy would lower my blood pressure. Everything I have read says that pregnancy increases blood pressure... but for most of my pregnancy so far I have had normal blood pressure. My doctor was right.
