Ethan's speech evaluations

We had the 3 evaluations at the beginning of December.  We just got the results today.  For psychological he is high average and average.  For the speech he is severely delayed.  He is 2 standard deviations below.  I knew he was behind but it is still hard to hear. everyone is recommending more speech therapy which is what we want. So I don't think i will have any problem with the school district

The speech teacher was tough.  She was kind of worst case scenario type of person telling me that some kids receive speech up until 8th grade.  She also put that Ethan wouldn't sit still for her.  It was his 3rd evaluation in 3 days.  He was tired of it.

On a side note it is funny what the dad remembers vs the mom.  DH says E weighed 7lbs 6 oz(he was 7lbs 1 oz) and had 2-3 ear infections(he has had 1)

Re: Ethan's speech evaluations

  • Definitely should not have a problem getting preschool services. Have they talked to you about you staying in EI until September? Because of how his birthday falls, and I'm guessing at his scores, but it sounds like you do have that option as long as you meet with your school district's CPSE before his 3rd birthday. Just throwing it out there.

I would take what the SP said with a grain of salt. I've seen kids who had horribly low language skills do extremely well once they hit preschool age, and if anything, need speech improvement in kindergarten. There is so much that goes on with maturation during that time - it boggles the mind!

And funny about DH - I guess everything gets intensified in their eyes when it comes to kid specifics.

  • our coordinator told us we have the option to use EI for 6 months after his 3rd birthday which would put us at August.  She said that if we go through the school district that services are not provided during the summer so we will definitely stick with EI.

  • That would be hard to hear, but I'm glad he is getting the help and you guys will see improvements soon.
  • I don't know anything about speech, but I hope it helps! I'm sure he'll be up to grade level in no time!!!
  • When you have your meeting - you could also ask if there is a speech program out of the house he may qualify for...it's a long shot since he "only" needs speech...but maybe Buffalo Hearing and Speech offers a playgroup type thing. I didn't look into it because Evan needs MORE than that...so I don't know if they do or not.

That is weird that the ST said stuff about needing speech for so long. And not sitting for an eval - she should come evaluate Evan :)

  • I'm glad he will be able to get keep getting speech therapy. i think he will do great and not need it too much longer. Certainly not til 8th grade!

  • I'm sorry that the news was hard to hear.   I hope that he will continue to make lots of improvement in therapy.  I think it seems very premature to talk about speech therapy all the way until 8th grade.  Sorry that she was such a downer.  :(

  • i've been there so i know the news is hard, but you are getting him the help he needs and that is the most important part. he'll be caught up in no time!

M has his one year eval in the next two weeks and i am so nervous. i also signed him up for the 3 part school dist eval since my coordinator told me it was best to have the paperwork in the works asap in order for him to be evaluated by the school dist before his 3rd b-day so if he still qualifies there won't be any gaps in his therapy.

Yes, but you have to go through the CPSE initial eligibility process before he turns 3 so that this can happen. Once he's found eligible at the CPSE level, you can opt to continue in EI until Aug. 31, 2012.
