Anyone considering this or have done it? I am very interested but I know it's pricey- just not sure how pricey?? It's one of those things that I'd hate to have had the opportunity and then be so mad I didn't do it if he needed it in the future! Thoughts appreciated
We're going to donate our cord blood. We can't afford to bank it specifically for us and I don't want to waste it. Our hospital actually keeps it stored for us for 30 days after birth and if we don't need it, then it gets donated.
It costs thousands to bank it. 6 years ago it was about $2000 from what I rememeber. We are going to donate ours. I've also heard that cord blood can't really help the child it came from, more for siblings of that baby.
We could not afford to bank Nathaniel's. It was really expensive. If we chose to donate it, we would have had to bring all the stuff with us, as our hospital "does not believe in that." We are delivering at a Catholic hospital, and they will not voluntarily do anything like that (and it's also why I can't get my tubes tied during my C-section.) You may need to check with your hospital as well.
That's interesting. I'm delivering at a catholic hospital as well, but they actually gave us all the info on donating our cord blood. I didn't even think about them not doing it. Good suggestion to check on it.
The standard practice at my birth center is to delay clamping the cord so that the baby can get all that good blood. One drawback to delayed clamping is that you can't then donate it or store it. But the benefits are terrific:
