June 2011 Moms

Momma's with DS with Hypospadias, come on in!

Are you going to fix it?  How severe is it?  And how old will your LO be when you do it?

Our LO saw the urologist the other day, and per a lot fo suggestion of you ladies we were going to do it on the 13th of January meaning he will be just over 7 months.  Well come to find out they are scheduling out to March already, WOW!!!  So needless to say we are doing it when they can and if there is a last minute opening.

They gave me the details today about how long the surgery takes, 2 hours, which was much longer than I had expected.  So I was just curious when you ladies are doing it and how severe yoru LO's is, and if the time differs based on the severity.

Thanks a million!

Re: Momma's with DS with Hypospadias, come on in!

  • My son doesn't have it, but my baby brother did. His hole was on the top and he ended up having his fixed when he was around 8 months. They fixed it and did the circ all at the same time. I was a teenager at the time and I remember him crying a lot for a couple days [from soreness/pain i assume] and then he was good as new, can't tell a difference.

Do you know why they waited until then.  It is making me nervous because the surgeon said they wait til 6-7 months for the lungs to handle being put under. Well another mom on here mentioned her DS was doing it at 18 months also, so now I am curious why our surgeon is doing it so much sooner.  I don't know if you know why but figured I would ask.  Thank you so muchf or your response though! :-)

  • My lo has it and his urethra is a little ways down on the penis not on the tip like it should be. I was against surgery at 1st but when the doctor showed me where he was actually peeing from I realized it could affect him when he gets older. He will have the surgery when he is 18 months old and be circumsized at the same time. The dr recommended anytime from when he is a year to a year and a half. On the 3-6 mos board a while back there were other ladies who mentioned their dr waiting until 9 mos or later. Maybe you can post this on the 6-9 mos board too. I know that Id be curious to see what they say.

  • I am going to post it there, to see what they say. Thanks a million! I did google and it says it could be done 6 months to 2 years. I know they will fix it if his penis curves also and figure if it is detailed like that I hope it can be done prior to crawling. Something I did not know until I read it, it can affect fertility so I am glad we decided to do it also.

  • One of my boys has it along with Chordee. Our pediatric urologist suggested having the surgery at 1 year. I don't have any advice - I'm scared to death myself.
