First Pregnancy and having some concerns

Hi Everyone. So I found out last Friday that I am pregnant with my first child, due August 29th, and have some questions about it.

Prior to finding out I am pregnant, I have never had an obgyn and always went to my primary care doctor to have my yearly pap smears and breast exams done (not the mammogram kind). Well I found out early last week that I was pregnant after taking 5 at home pregnancy tests and decided that I needed to get it confirmed by my doctor. Well my primary care doctor was not in all week so I saw another doctor just so I could get it confirmed before I told all of my family on Christmas. The doctor said I was pregnant but just had me pee in a cup and that was it. Told me my expected due date, how far along I was, to start prenatal vitamins, and that I would be contacted within the next week by his assistant so I knew what obgyn I will have to make an appointment with. Well I made my appointment with an obgyn this past Monday and it's for Jan 19th when I am 8 weeks into the pregnancy. I am excited about that and just focusing on it but am a little concerned about the fact that I haven't had a lot of symptoms with this pregnancy that I have read in books and says that I should be having. Yes, I know I am only 5 weeks and 2 days into it but I feel like maybe I should be having more of the symptoms than what I am. Maybe I will be one of the lucky moms that doesn't get sick. Who knows. I know that all last week I felt nauseous in the morning but didn't ever get sick, I have been taking my prenatals now for a week and take them at night with my dinner and feel fine, I am very tired more than I normally ever am, and just now my breast are starting to feel tender but I am wondering if my pregnancy is going as it should be considering I never got any blood drawn to confirm my pregnancy.

I am brand new to this site, this pregnancy, and all of the emotions that come with it. If anyone could give me some helpful advice, encouraging words, or just some positive feedback, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

  • You're doing it! There really isn't much to do in the beginning. Take your prenatals, eat healthy and research what you can and can't eat/do.

I am pretty tired all the time. Do your prenatal vitamins have iron? I hear that helps.

Congrats!  That's all that some Dr will do to confirm a pregnancy so don't worry about it.

Not all women have 'symptoms'.  I feel great, I get some fatigue around 3p and I haven't noticed an increase in my urination but I drink 12-16 cups of water a day.

Most women don't start to get morning sickness (m/s) until 6 wks, that's when most of the common symptoms kick in.

Continue with prenatals, add more paragraphs into your long posts so it's not overwhelming to read and relax as it's all out of our hands at this point.

  • I am not sure if they have iron in them or not. I am taking the Centrum prenatal vitamins. I will look that up when I get home and see. I just am wanting to make sure that I won't miscarry or anything. My mom had a miscarriage before she had me over 27 years ago but the doctors didn't know what caused that back then. Other than that, no one in my family has had a miscarriage and both my older sister and youngest sister had their babies with no problems so I am sure I will be fine but want to make sure.

Thanks for responding so quickly! :)

If you were to m/c there's nothing you can do right now to prevent it.  I had 6 before having DD and they were all of unknown reasonings.  That's what I meant when I said it's out of our hands.

  • I don't think your choices factor much into a miscarriage, it just happens so try and not worry. I know how you feel though, you get this HUGE, overwhelming news and think there is so much to do when in reality your body does it all and you are only along for the ride.

  • Hi there, first time momma.  First, just take a deep breath and try to remain calm.  The entire journey of pregnancy is full of what ifs and how abouts and whys, and you have to just try to roll with it all...easier said than done, I know.

Second, remember that your pregnancy is unique because you are unique and your growing baby in unique.  What you experience is likely to be completely different than your friends will explain and may vary greatly from what you read...even what your doctor may tell you!

Symptoms - you may have them all, you may have few.  With my DS, I felt like throwing up (prayed I would, at times) for a solid 16 weeks.  So far, this one is making me quite ill, too, but it's different.  I cannot really explain how...it just is.

Just think really positive thoughts and don't worry!  As for blood draws, you would likely only have that if you had previous issues with a pregnancy or difficulty conceiving.  Since it sounds like that is not the case, trust the pee stick!  :)

  • Your fears and worries are totally normal.

Most doctors just do a pee test to confirm and most don't see you until about 8 weeks. I didn't see my actual doc until then and she did an internal ultrasound so we got to see the baby (and get a pic!).

I didn't have many symptoms other than fatigue and some mild nausea until 9-10 weeks. Really, once I hit 10 weeks, the nausea and morning (night) sickness started for me but now I'm 12 weeks, almost 13, and it's mostly passed. You have had some symptoms, they just haven't been severe. Be glad, because morning sickness and constant nausea are miserable.

It's hard, but try to not worry about a m/c. Even now, doctors often can't tell you why you miscarry...it just happens due to something being wrong with the baby and things like that. There isn't really anything you can do to prevent it. Either you will or your won't, so there is no use worrying yourself sick over it.

    Good luck with your pregnancy!

  • Thanks for all of the response ladies! I really appreciate it. Sorry for how long the post was as you can tell I have never posted on here before.

As for me being worried or rattling my brain over this, I am actually very calm and told myself when I first found out I was expecting that I am going to be calm and just let this pregnancy do it's thing and take its course and just enjoy the whole experience and not worry about anything and just be calm. The concerns I voiced on my post earlier weren't bugging me a whole lot just some questionable thoughts I had and wanted to see what others think...promise! I am remaining calm and just living my life day by day and starting to prepare for my baby! :)

It's nice to know I'm not alone in this process! :):)

My doctor told me that smoking can increase the risk of m/c IF you are ALREADY at risk but if you haven't already had one (I've had 2) you are fine. Remember though if you do smoke that quitting cold turkey can also cause m/c because of the fact that the baby is used to the nicotine and the stress that he/she would experience as a result so it's better to cut down slowly if you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day.

  • I don't smoke or do drugs or anything like that so I am good. I am sure I will be fine but so much appreciate all the feedback! Y'all are awesome! :)
  • I was the same as you... I didn't have any symptoms except for sore bbs and I was really tired... I started having some very mild cramps at around 6 weeks and  they stopped at 8 weeks. I didn't start getting nauseous until halfway through my 8th week, and I'm still not nauseous enough to have to throw up. It's kind of off and on with the sickness thing. It's completely normal not to be super sick, every pregnancy is different. But I know that I was also kind of worried when I had no symptoms and once I started getting nauseous I felt relieved haha.  Good luck with everything!
  • Other than being tired and having tender breasts, not much happened before my 5/6th week of pregnancy.  At 5 weeks I started getting morning sickness and I've been sick regularly since week 6.  Really looking forward to the end of the first trimester.  Changes for me were rather abrupt - fine and then one day, bam, I now live in the bathroom every evening.

It sounds like you're doing everything right - taking prenatal vitamins and taking care of yourself.  Also good to wean off/stop any vices (alcohol, smoking, etc) and pump up healthy habits (like exercise).  If you want easy advice, go to the library or bookstore and invest in a pregnancy book.  I have "Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy" and know many moms who like "What to Expect when You're Expecting".

The first appointment for me was pretty simple.  They drew a lot of blood, did an ultrasound, urine test, weighed me, and I spoke with the doctor.  The office has free pregnancy magazines (Fit Pregnancy was one, that the nurse made sure I got a copy).  It was a great kick-off (so to say) for my pregnancy.  My OB/GYN office is fabulous and I left feeling so supported.
