Does spitting up freak anyone else out?

I kind of remember feeling this way with Cal.  Spit-ups freak me out.  Particularly when they come out of nowhere and are HUGE.  Today I nursed Finn, then snuggled him upright for about 15 minutes afterwards (patting his back most of the time).  Finally, I lifted him up so he was facing me and out came a huge burp/vomit/spitup all over both of us.  It just kept coming.

I remember our pedi saying with Cal to do shorter feedings and keep him upright for 20+ minutes after a feeding.  But that never seems to help, and I feel so bad disturbing their post-nursing slumber on the Boppy.

He also burps like a champ - I mean, man-burps.  And they come randomly - never when I am actually burping him.  And the farts & poos - unreal!  Very frequent and forceful.  Yet today I think he was having a gas problem, b/c he was really fussy and seemed to be working on forcing something out (my guess was gas).  Poor guy, he's just a concert of bodily functions.  Much more than Cal was!

He also coughs sometimes while feeding.  I had an oversupply with Cal and that seems to be the case now as well.  I think it's too much all at once.

Any other advice?  And please remind me that this is normal (for some babies), and he's not going to choke?

ETA:  I can tell he swallows a lot of air when he nurses.  He also gets hiccups all the time.

  • Oh man, my son was the king of spitting up. I remember one or two instances when it also came out of his nose and he chocked for a few seconds, so scary. I thought for sure he was throwing up his entire bottle but he was gaining weight and having plenty of wet diapers so obviously he was digesting SOME milk.

Unfortunately, he didn't stop spitting up until around 7-8 months but what helped decrease the amount of spit up was switching bottles. We switched to Born Free and they made a world of difference. (I see that you're EB so I guess that doesn't help you, lol.) Other than that, we just made sure he burped after every meal and kept an eye on him at all times.

  • Have you tried gripe water? We used the mother's bliss brand specifically. They had/ have it at walgreens and buy buy baby. It helps with gas, hiccups, and just general tummy issue. The spit up was insane with both of mine. I think the gripe water just helped quiet all the tummy problems down almost instantly and give him some nap time between feeds.
  • There wasn't a feed that went by that Jacob didn't spit up!  Its crazy!  Sometimes it was just a bit and other times it was volumes!  I was definitely freaked out by it and even took him to the pedi numerous times about it.  He did have terrible reflux, but I think some babies are just bigger spitters than others!

  • EVERYTHING he is doing is perfectly normal.  Parker does all those things and Caroline did too.

The random HUGE spit ups are just a baby thing.  Totally normal.

You are doing everything right...he's just a breastfed baby whose body is still trying to figure out this whole life-outside-the-womb thing.

    Normal, normal, normal.

(The only thing I do differently is nurse them when they wake up instead of to sleep...with the exception of bedtime.  We loosely follow the EASY method...but they do still sometimes fall asleep nursing and I do let them snooze on the boppy...no need to interrupt that sweet slumber ;-)

  • The spitups and coughing while feeding indicate to me that it is probably a little reflux which is totally normal.  Some babies stomach muscles are just weak and not completely developed so they cant always hold down all of their feed.

Both of my kids were big spitters and my furniture and carpets and clothes are proof.  I was always covered in spitup.  DD also choked/coughed a lot.  I expected her to grow out of it sooner than she did grow out of it eventually.

If the reflux isnt causing pain and he is gaining weight appropriately then I wouldnt worry about it.  Just keep lots of burp cloths or cloth diapers around!
