Name Suggestions to go with a "trendy" name

I have lurked on the boards for a while, but this will be my first post. I know from lurking that my son's name is quite hated on here.

His name is Brayden. We really weren't trying to be "trendy" and I had no idea how hated it was. About 7-8 years ago when we were in our early 20s we lived out of state and my husband worked with someone named Brayden who was our age. Prior to that, I had never heard the name, as I never really followed baby name trends when I was young and childless. When we were considering names for our son, we did come to realize that the name was on the "trendy" list, but we both really liked it and had no idea that it was so hated, lol. So we used it anyway.

So now my dilemma is that we are TTC and I just can't come up with any names that I love, or even like, that seem to go with our son's name, because typically I don't like trendy names, if that makes sense.

I know we have time since I'm not even pregnant, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas of names you like that could "go with" a trendy name, but maybe aren't so trendy.

The only name I somewhat like for a girl is Kendal. No ideas on boys.

Re: Name Suggestions to go with a "trendy" name

  • Don't worry about what people online think of your name!  As long as you and DH love it, that's all that matters.  And IRL, I don't think the average person is as in-tune with baby naming trends and popularity "rules."  I see a lot of names similar to your son in my son's school and in my community.  It seems the norm, rather than the exception like it is here.

In short, I think as long as your child's name isn't KrayzeeBone Johnson, you're fine. Stick out tongue

As for names that go with Brayden, how about some of these:

    BOYS

    Carter

    Carson

    Kyle

    Wyatt

    Nolan

    Shane

    GIRLS

    Avery

    Aubrey

    Bailey

    Riley

    Shea

    Tessa

  • exactly... Brayden is NMS but is my nephew's name spelled "Braden" and there is nothing wrong with the name. It's perfectly acceptable.

check out the Social Security's list of top 100 baby names. There are plenty of names that would match your son's with a similar popularity.

    Logan

    Landon

    Luke/Lucas

    Owen

    Jackson

  • Thanks everyone! I like a lot of the names posted, so I guess there are names that will go after all. I am definitely going to save this post.

Of course I don't mind if people don't like my son's name because we do love it and couldn't picture him being named anything else. It's funny because before I started coming on the bump, I never thought anything of it. Now sometimes when I tell someone his name I wonder if it is getting the side eye, lol. Not that I care, it's just funny how I think of that now.

  • I found that my tastes have changed a little since coming to the bump. In a good way, I have come to be more open to the idea of using my DH's grandmother's name, Iris, as a middle name, after I saw how accepting and enthusiastic people were of it here. Got me to thinking, "well I guess that's not too bad". Same goes for other more "traditional" names that before I thought were yuck but after seeing other people's combinations w/middle names and seeing other people's children with those names made me warm up to SOME of them. (Still not a fan of names like Mary, Joan or Ingrid).

On the bad end, I've liked Allyson/Alyson since the Notebook as I love the nickname Allie but think it's cuter spelled Ally or Aly. Now I have found that many people hate those spellings and it's kind of ruined the name for me.

  • I think that happens often.  When we named our first DD, I had no idea about the "old lady name" trend.  We named her Edith after my great-grandmother, who was pretty much the most wonderful woman who ever lived.  After she was born and I started bumping and more of my friends started having kids, I realized we were right "in trend" without realizing it all.  Oh well!  And with my second DD, I KNEW Charlotte was becoming more and more popular, but it was the only name that we both loved and had family significance, so we went with it.  And for what it's worth, I think Brayden is a great name.  I wouldn't worry about finding a name that goes with it trend-wise.
  • I have a nephew named Hayden and his brother is Gavin.  I think Gavin "goes" really well without being too trendy and is a bit more classic.

When my nephew Hayden was born six years ago I had no idea about the -aden trend. I thought it was such an awesome name and the only association I had with it was the guy from the old TV show Coach.  DH's best friend's mn is Brayden and  in college all my friends and I thought he had the greatest mn...so did everyone else apparently!  hahah Don't feel bad.  Names wouldn't be trendy if everyone disliked them.

I had a Braedon 3 years ago as well... I loved it then and still do now!

Don't let that ruin the name for you! My name is Allison and I love it! My NN is Alli, which I think is an easy and simple spelling.
