How do you cook your ham?

Re: How do you cook your ham?

  •  Sorry, I've honestly never prepared a ham. But I have bought one from the Honey Baked Ham Store, which is crazy expensive, but yummy :)

  • I bought a bone-in spiral sliced ham. The package says it is fully cooked so it appears I just need to throw it in the oven to heat it up.  It also came with a glaze packet that I can put on it the last 15 minutes in the oven. This will be my first ham so I hope it turns out!

  • We bake it with a glaze I got from America's Test Kitchen.

    3/4 cup maple syrup

    1/2 cup orange marmalade

    2 tbsp unsalted butter

    1 tbsp dijon mustard

    1 tsp ground pepper

    1/4 tsp cinnamon

Combine all in a saucepan. Cook over medium, stirring occasionally until thick (about 5-10 minutes).

**I usually double this so I have some to dip the ham in**

The instructions we found for cooking the ham were with this recipe. It reads:

1.Leave on wrapper, soak in hot H2O for 45 mins. Drain and repeat.

2.Adjust oven rack to lowest level. Heat oven to 250*. Unwrap ham and toss wrapper. Place ham in oven bag. Gather to fit snugly, tie and trim the ends. Set in pan cut side down and make four slits in the plastic.

    3. Bake till center is 100* (10 minutes per pound).

    4. Remove from oven, increase oven to 350*. Cut open bag and brush with 1/3 cup glaze and bake till sticky.

    5. Remove to board and brush with glaze. Loosely tent with foil for 15 minutes. Heat glaze and 4-6 tbsp juice till thick.

  • I ALWAYS do the Elton Brown variation.

    Coat with mustard

    Coat with Brown sugar

Then coat with rum, or liquour of choice (put in a spray bottle if possible)

    Coat with crushed ginger snaps.

I also add butter to the bottom of the pan that I am cooking the ham in. It makes its own glaze at the bottom. Best ham ever (I love it, well LOVED back when I ate meat, but I still make it and everyone that eats it loves it)
