Preemies

New young mother, advice & updates welcome!

Hello! My name is Marquia, and im new to this site, and just trying to get a feel for everyone else on here (:

I ended up having my daughter early, due to severe preeclampsia (which i probably had because i'm a young mother), via c-section. My daughters name is Alexandria & she was born at 31 weeks & 5 days; her birthdate was September 6th, but our due date was November 3rd.  When she was born she was 2 pounds 14 ounces, but now at 3 and a half months, shes almost ten pounds! Doctors have told me that she will most likely develop 2 months behind (since she's 2 months early) or how she would develop if she were born full term. I was just wondering when everyone else's children were born, how their weight is going, and where they're at as far as development goes.

-also, any tips or advice is welcome, thanks!

  • Welcome! I love the name Alexandria.

My baby's younger than yours and was born earlier. She was born at 24w2d @ 1 lb 6 oz. She's now 8 weeks old (32 weeks gestational age) and weighs 3 lbs 1 oz. She was born early because I got HELLP syndrome - similar to pre-e, but once I was diagnosed I had to have her ASAP. My liver was swelling and it would be fatal to the both of us to continue the pregnancy. Don't blame yourself for it because you're young - it can happen to anyone.

Good luck, this board has been a great support.

  • I like her name Alexandria.  My birthday is also on September 6th.  I like being a Virgo, and I like the Sapphire birthstone (she is going to like her sapphires).

My son was born close to 31 weeks.  It took him a little bit longer to reach the milestones--baby food, crawling, finger food, walking--but once he got there, he really did well with all of those things.  Just be patient and keep reminding yourself to look at her adjusted age rather than her actual age for these milestones.  We are now focused on getting my son more vocabulary because he is babbling a lot at 19 months--so this means we have asked for more books and educational toys for Christmas.

My son is 30 lbs, and he wears 24 months/2T at this point.

  • Catalina Isabella was born Oct 12 (on my 28th birthday) at 35 1/2 weeks at 4lbs.  Stayed 30 days in the NICU until she gained enough stamina to eat everything by mouth (not a feeding tube). She's now 2 1/2 months, weighing in at 7 1/2 lbs.

  • Emmeline was born at 31w3d and weighed 3 lbs 13 oz. She is now 2 months old actual age and weighs around 9 lbs.

  • Congratulations and welcome to the board!  The ladies here are a wealth of knowledge!!

My twins (Will & Erin) were born at 33w6d on June 21st, due to severe PreE as well, after 6+ weeks on hospitalized bedrest.  Will was also severe IUGR -- 2lbs 7oz, while Erin was closer to the size of a 33wk'er at 4lbs 2oz.   Both spent about a month in the NICU working on feeding & growing.  Today, Erin weighs 12lbs 9.5oz, and Will weighs 10lbs 14oz, at 6 months old.

We utilize Early Intervention services (EI), and their developmental specialist comes every Friday for play therapy.  After this morning's visit, Erin is right on track with other 6mo olds, and Will is only slightly behind.  Since she has more weight to her, her core is just stronger, than his, but they are doing the same things at the same time...   Rolling over (both back to belly and belly to back, supported sitting, grabbing for toys, holding their bottles, etc.)

  • Welcome! It's so nice to have other preemie moms to learn from here! My LO was born at 29 weeks in Sept as well. My due date was 11/22. He is almost 11lbs now (born at 3.5lbs which was big!) and is smiling, cooing and working on head control. He's acting like he is a  few weeks ahead in some areas (like smiling) but more like his adjusted age in others (head control). Hope that helps!
