? about size of baby

If I was a small baby (6lb 1oz) and DH was only a little bigger (6lb 12oz), does this reflect how big our LO will be? Or is there no correlation between our sizes and her size?

Re: ? about size of baby

  • I'm hoping it has no correlation because I was nearly 10 pounds!

AMEN TO THAT... I was 10 lb 8 oz.... and the smallest baby in my family was 8 lb 6 oz... so hopefully it doesnt correlate...

  • Genetics does have alot to say about it...but nothing is hard and fast...a lot also has to do with your health, condition with a little bit (apparently I'm finding out now) your diet.  You may indeed have a child that runs large (my husband and I were both big babies according to *today's* standards, but not necessarily "back in the day")  My babies ranged from a near 7lbs (a month early) to just approaching 10lbs (3 days past due-date).  This time around, the 7th month u/s I had to take (I get more because of my age) registered the baby at just a nod past 5lbs and in the 53rd percentile...exactly four weeks later this kid shot right into the 90th percentile and I'm facing the 10lb "cut off" at my doc's office.

  • I agree that genetics do have a lot to do with your LO's size, but that it doesn't count for everything.

That being said, I was 4lb 15oz & 18in at birth, DD#1 was 4lb 10oz & 18in at birth. DD#2 is on track to being small (IUGR) as well. But, I'm guessing that I was also IUGR, so therefore I have IUGR babies? I don't know, but I hope I'm not scaring those of you 10lbers Wink

  • There can be. I was a bigger baby, higher end of 8 lbs as was H and big babies run in his dad's side of the family. My first baby was 9 lbs 7 oz. Oh and large heads also run in the gene pool, lucky me!

  • I was a 5 lb 5 oz baby and was right on time and I had a 7lb 2 oz baby at 39 weeks.  I'm not sure if there was a correlation.
  • At our first OB appt, doc told us that babies tend to run closer to the mom's birth weight.  Greeeeeeaaat, I was over 10 lbs. and my bro was over 9.

That said, I think it's crazy that when we were babies, it was normal to have an 8-10 lb baby, and now people are like WOWWWWWW you have a HUGEMONGOID baby if it's more than like 7 lbs.  Just my completely unsolicited opinion.

Apparently, I'm going to be just fine though... doc told me that I have a "great pelvis".  Uhhhh, thanks, I've never heard that before, but I'll take it as a compliment! LOL

  • Great question. I'm curious to see the answers.

I was just under 8lbs.  My DS was born 40w 3d at 6lbs 13oz and DD was born at 39w at 7lbs, so on the smaller side, also. I defintaely don't expect this little one to weigh more than 7.5lbs.

  • They say it does. However, both DH and I were over 8lbs and our first was 6.14.
  • My MIL can't remember how big my husband was, he wasn't HUGE at all, somewhere between 6-8lbs.  I was 7lbs 8oz and my first baby turned out to be 7lbs 4oz, 20.5".

So far I haven't gotten any weight guesses for my second child.  The only thing I've been told by two different techs doing ultrasounds is that, "He's going to be a tall baby" due to the length of his legs.  There are tall people on my husband's side, my FIL is 6'7, BIL is about 6'4 and my husband is around 6'1.

Lol...well, I'm hoping not as well, but for the opposite reason...I was only 4 lbs when I was born at 32 weeks.

  • Well, DD was the smallest of all her cousins at 8lbs 7 oz 20.5 inches at 39 weeks. I was 9 lbs, 21 inches at 40 weeks, and DH was over 10 lbs and 23 inches full term. DD#2 measured in the 30 percentile at 23 weeks, and I got all upset at the time thinking I did something wrong because she was so "small" but they said DD#1 was going to be small because I only gained 13lbs. I think it is 75% genetic and 25% environmental (ie your diet, your habits, etc.) My mom smoked while pregnant and the doctors back then encouraged that so you wouldn't have "big" babies. I didn't get the message, apparently. I anticipate DD#2 will be at least 8 lbs regardless of the ultrasounds. I know of someone who ripped three ways with a 5 lb baby, and someone who didn't tear at all and went without meds with a 9 pounder
