Heart Murmer?

DS had a heart murmer the day he was born but it went away after that. He just had his 2 month appointment and it's back. The pedi said it's not subtle, but the fact that it is coming and going is good and it's probably innocent. However, she wants us to see a cardiologist. DS had two fetal echos bc my nephew had a hole in his heart. I'm so worried. Anyone have experience w/ this?

Re: Heart Murmer?

  • My daughter has a murmer too.  Our pedi said the same thing, it is likely innocent but has referred us to a cardiologist to check.  From what I understand, murmers are quite common.  I would think that if your son has had two fetal echos already they would have found anything that was really concerning.  Best of luck with the cardiologist.

  • My kids don't have one but I did.  But it went away around age 5...its usually NOT a big deal at all.  I'm sure everything will be just fine!

  • Ethan had a hole in his heart, an ASD they called it. This caused a murmur and we saw a cardiologist. The hole closed on it's own by 4 months and we were released from the cardio. Good luck!

  • Heart murmurs are extremely common and more often than not, completely harmless.  Of course get it checked out to be sure, but more than likely it's nothing, truly just a little extra noise in there that means nothing.
  • Was your LO a preemie?  If so, that makes it even more common.  DD also had one at birth.  She also had a small hole in her heart, but it closed up by the time we got in to see her cardiologist at 6 mos.  The murmur was still there, so he had us come back at one year, and he couldn't hear a thing.  It very commonly is something they grow out of.  I also have one, but it wasn't diagnosed until I was 18.  It gives me heart palpitations from time to time, but is harmless.  GL and try not to worry :)

  • My DS has a murmur, but it didn't show up until his 1-year well check.  He saw a cardiologist and it was determined to be an innocent one, it's sort of like an extra beat.  They also mentioned his resting heartbeat was crazy fast (which was funny because he's very active!).

They've still heard it at every check-up since, including his 2-year a couple weeks ago.  She said it could go away randomly or stay around the rest of his life.  But in the end, it's nothing to be concerned with.

  • One of my guys sees a cardiologist.  Up until a couple of months ago, he had only seen him in the NICU and I had never talked with him face-to-face.  After our last appt, I found out that everyone is born with a small hole (PFO) between the right and left sides of the heart.  In 75-80% of people, it closes shortly after birth.  Many people have these and don't even know it.  PFOs can cause a murmur and often is a murmur that comes and goes.

I'm sure it's nothing, but I'd go see the cardiologist for a peace of mind.  Keep us posted!
