Uncomfortable Latch Due to Teeth

My DD is almost 8 months old and has her two bottom teeth.  She's not biting, but her latch is becoming uncomfortable, particularly at night or when she's tired.  I've been sore for the first time in months.  I'm concerned how this will be as more teeth come in.  Any tips?  My original goal was to breastfeed for one year, but recently I've been thinking I would like to go a bit longer.  Thanks!

Re: Uncomfortable Latch Due to Teeth

  • Maybe try to make sure she still has a slightly off center latch? Make her stop and rematch if it hurts. I'm still nursing my DS who is 2 and has all his teeth and it really hasn't been bad although I was worried about teeth, my point is it can be done. GL!

  • We had this when DS first got his teeth. When he had a latch that was uncomfortable I took him off and made him readjust, eventually we found a new comfortable. Also he seems to latch harder when he has a new tooth coming in,  usually only lasts a week or so.
  • My Ds's latch gets bad when he's teething.   We just unlatch and relatch.   When he relatches I tell him nice nursing and it's worked so far.   We've been getting teeth since 4 months and are at 20 months still nursing.
  • Thank you! I think you may be right about the teething. Her bottom teeth have been in for a month now, but her latch just started getting uncomfortable this week. I bet her top ones are getting ready to come in.
