Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Do you sleep when your baby has a cold or is sick?

When my baby has gotten sick (2 times now) we do not sleep.. b/c he can't breathe! We sleep in chairs or wake up every hour about... Is this the norm? I just want to know that I am not alone in the no sleep when they are sick... Which means lots of people are not sleeping since a lot of kids are sick in the winter... I just want to feel better about this ... Please tell me I'm not alone or tell me what to do different.. I have tried it all:) Thanks!  I now go through anxiety about him getting sick again!

Re: Do you sleep when your baby has a cold or is sick?

  • yes, we did it all, but the struggling with breathing from the congestion was bad... Laying flat made it even worse.. .  He would be ok, and then struggle after an hour or so.. The paci didnt help either since he would use it and then struggle b/c he couldnt breathe through his mouth.. Just stinks. I am an awful person too when i do not sleep!!

  • If you mean they don't sleep well so in turn you are up, then yes we had 2 weeks of a cold/ear infection and every other night he would wake bc he had a hard time breathing or would cough and wake himself up.
  • DD is so sick now, so she's sleeping with us since she is so congested and miserable....my poor baby...so yes I've tried it all like you and some nights are just very hard to have a good night sleep since she is so uncomfortable. She has a horrible cough, and a ear infection.

Hope your LO gets better soon.

  • DD got a pretty nasty cold very quickly on Sunday night, she woke up every 20 minutes because she was so congested and running a slight fever.  I kicked DH out of bed, put all the pillows behind me and next to me and laid her on my chest.  I didn't sleep great but got some sleep.  The next night DH did it for part of the night and I took the other part because we both had to work and had to get some sleep.  By Tuesday night she was completely fine again.  Thank god it was quick.
  • DD has had 3 colds so far and yes we do sleep.  We have to sleep and that's all there is to it.  I do check on her maybe once during the night and if she needs it, I will wake her up, change her diaper, give her some saline solution and suction her nose.

But there is no freaking way I'd wake up every hour or sleep in a chair.

  • I do not choose to stay up with my LO, but everytime I put him down after about 45 min, he can't breathe well due to congestion... So I need to have him upright or at least sleep in my bed a little upright.  or else no one sleeps!  Trust me, I NEED my sleep too!  But he wakes up and cries every hour or little more when sick... So I really do not have a choice... I wish it were different!
  • when ds is sick he is put to bed in his portacot next to ours so that I can try and sleep while still keeping eye on him makes it so much easier on all of us not getting up every hour or trying to sleep in chair. i just raise the head of bed and use baby vics to help with congestion
