3rd Trimester

When to start buying Nursing Bra's and what kind?

Should I just wait until after DS is here to even see what size I need?

Pre-pregnancy I was a 36D and I've went up almost a full cup size to a DD. So I have to have something with support in the straps as well as an underwire in the cups.

What little I have looked at are so expensive. But I don't want to have to just buy a fwe bras and see if they work. Like I did with my DD. Any suggestions on good nursing bras that aren't outrageous?

Re: When to start buying Nursing Bra's and what kind?

  • With DD I bought them before hand and the fit was never quite right. So this time around I am waiting until after my milk comes in, prob'ly 1 week after delivery. Gives the body time to get engorged and then settle to a fairly normal size.

  • Before I had my first baby, I always wore a 36D too.

Two months after she was born I really wanted a better fitting nursing bra.  I had a couple from Motherhood Maternity that were 36DD's but they didn't fit that well, so I got measured at Nordstrom.  The lady put me at a 34G and it was a great fit.

I also recommend picking up a bra extender too.

  • I would start with nursing tanks and sleep style nursing bras where sizing doesn't need to be as exact.  They have good, affordable ones at Target which are a great starting point.

I would wait to buy other nursing bras since there's no way to know what size you're going to need.  Give your supply a few weeks to regulate after your milk comes in before you buy them.  I didn't like the Target nursing bras so I got mine from Motherhood Maternity.  They were more comfortable but still affordable.  I'd like to add a few nicer bras and tanks to what I already have so I think I'll get some Bravado ones this time around.

If you're going to use an underwire I would recommend getting fitted too.  Some people don't have any issues, but the one time I wore an underwire bra I got my first and only clogged duct.  The right size should help you avoid this.

  • Bought nursing bras when I needed new bras. They run bigger than regular bras. I have gotten them all over, not praticular brand. I would try them on first no matter what, bc even the same brands dont always fit the same. Try jcpenney or motherhood.

This.  I am normally a 34/36C and went up to a 36DDD when my milk came in.  I went and got fitted for a bra at a local baby/breastfeeding store a few weeks after DS was born.  Before that I just used the BFing tanks that come in S, M, L.

  • I just purchased my first nursing bras and tanks but I am much smaller so I just got the strechy kind.

I am keeping the receipt and tags on "just in case".

  • I got a cheapy from a friend to use for the first few day, never wore it. I just wore nursing tanks until DS was 12 days, and then went to a lingerie store and was properly fitted for a nursing bra. As with regular bras, and properly fitting nursing bra is important. Yes they can be expensive but if you plan to nurse your baby for awhile it is well worth the money. Be sure to go for a fitting when you are getting full. My Dh came along and hung out with DS while I was fitted, by the time I was done, DS was awake and needed to eat, the staff were awesome and let me use my fitting room to nurse him.

I looked at some different brands and types. Including the sleep bra and the soft wireless. I've always had to have a wired bra because I've always been a little top heavy. Now I used to be a fitted bra consultant a few years back. Just not for nursing bra's. Is there really that big of a difference in measuring for a regular bra v.s. a nursing bra?
