So, I found a lump in my breast

I had noticed some changes in my breast and today went in to have it checked out.  I am scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound on January 3rd.  I am so scared right now.  I am not sure how I am going to keep it together untill then.  I've read all the stats and all and realize that there is a good chance that it will be nothing, but I can't stop crying thinking of the what ifs.  I'm trying to keep it together for my kids - they are napping now - and I've only told DH and one other person.  I'm just freaking out.  No point to this other then to get it out somewhat, but if others have been through this, how did it go?  How did you get through the waiting and uncertainty?

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this and have to wait so long for the mammogram. I'll keep you in my t&p's.

  • I worried alot, had a couple of breakdowns and tried to keep in mind that the odds were on my side.  The waiting is the worst part.  Keep in mind, you probably won't know anything at your appointment on the 3rd and will have to wait to get the results from your doctor.  I'm sorry you're going through this-it sucks.
  • Thanks for the replies.  The doc I saw said to call two days after the test so I will have to wait until the 5th or 6th.  My doctor is on vacation so I saw someone else in the practice.  I assume it will go back to my regular OBGYN when he gets back?

  • I'm sorry, I have no experience. But is there a way you could get on a wait list? So if someone cancels and a spot opens up before the 3rd you could get in?

  • I am so sorry this is a worry- that is scary, even though you are right it is probably nothing.  But I have a big HELLS NO on how long it is taking them to get you in for a mammo.  I would be the squeaky wheel in this situation and do whatever you need to do to get in sooner.  Seriously, you should not have to wait that long- that is terrible.  Best of luck, please update when you have news.
  • I am so sorry you are going through this. Same thing happened to me last June, had a mammogram and ultrasound turned out to be absolutely nothing, but it sure was scary. And yes, I would seriously call every single day, a few times a day if you can to see if anyone cancel to get in sooner. I will be praying for you.
  • It sucks. I rubbed the boob until it hurt -- I was just so worried. Hang in there, I know it's hard.
  • I'm so sorry. Hope all goes well with the mammogram and u/s and it turns out to be nothing!

Yes, I did this too.  In fact, I couldn't even say for sure if it was tender before I started pushing it constantly to see if it was really a lump.

I am pretty sure they scheduled the mammo like that on purpose because my period starts next week and they wanted to wait to be sure it wasn't just hormonal.  Originally the doc was just going to have me come back 7 days after my period to recheck - I mentioned I think its been there longer so they went ahead with the scan instead.  Thanks for the well wishes.

  • Huge hugs and tons of T&P. Please post a follow up. We'll be thinking of you. My mom had a double mastectomy with reconstruction 5 years ago. Not a single round of chemo. She's doing absolutely awesome and she looks great. Not saying it's that, just trying to tell you that even the worst case scenario doesn't mean it will be the worst possible outcome. Man I hope that came across right and made you feel better- not worse.

  • I am sorry you are going through this.  I went through it last December but for me I was the one in 8 that got bad news.  80% of lumps turn out to be NOTHING.   The waiting was horrible.  I had meltdowns all the time.  I will be saying a prayer for you.

I don't want to leave you worrying about me...I have completed my treatments and had my final surgery last week.  I am doing great and it was caught early.  I hope you have NOTHING but good news.
