Bike helmets?

DD is getting a bike (her first) for Christmas. So, obviously, had to get her a helmet. Took her to try on so it fits well. However, are the helmets just styrofoam covered plastic?

I never had a helmet growing up- (did any of us?! Lol) so I am not sure what to look for.

Also should I get her elbow and knee pads?

Re: Bike helmets?

  • Yup.  Just styrofoam covered with plastic. A friend of mine's sister was hit by a car while riding her bike when we were in high school.  The helmet saved her life, literally, so I'm kinda OCD about the kids wearing them always.  I just got one for DS since he's starting to get interested in riding a trike.  Obviously, he doesn't "need" it but we're starting the habit early.

I don't think you need the elbow or knee pads.  DD#1 sometimes wears them as she's starting to learn to ride without training wheels, but not often.  They're great for scooters and skates, though and we have them.

  • Oh, I wouldn't allow her to ride without a helmet! Even though I did all the time when I was little- different times and all.

Just wanted to make sure that the helmet is ok to use and there wasn't some other better helmet material.

  • No I figured that out.  I was just saying that I'm always surprised that these little pieces of styrofoam does so much.  It doesn't seem like it would, does it?
  • Exactly! Styrofoam just doesn't seem like it would hold up enough. but I guess I can't think of anything else that would replace it.
