We just found out we are expecting a girl in May and very excited and now we are trying to figure out a name. We have have a 2yr old DD, named Ava Lilliana (last name sounds like Kipenelli, but longer and more complicated (12 letters)). We have tried to pick short names to go with the long complicated last name and this time around I want to incorporate the names of both my grandmas (Elaine and Anne) and my mom (Laurie). I played around with it and took the first 2 letters of each name and came up with Elan, which would be pronouced similar to Elin. (Yes I know it's Tiger Wood's ex-wifes name, but not why we are choosing that name:) ) My husband and I both prefer the spelling of Elin, but I feel like I am leaving my one grandma (Anne) out if I change the spelling. Anyways, I guess my question is, do you think if we use the spelling Elan, people will pronounce it like Elin or make the "lan" sound more like "ann" where the "ann" is very pronounced? I hope this makes sense. FYI, middle name is Joelle.
Re: Girls Name
That's a lot of names to try to incorporate into one (short) name and Elan would be pronounced totally differently than Elin.
Maybe two middle names?

Elan, IMO is a boy's name. Elin is a girl's name.
How about Elanna (prn Eh-lohn-uh)?
Yes Elin is pronounced Ee-lin. I guess I was thinking Elan could be pronounced that way since when you think of a name like Allen or Alan, they both have the same ending sound of "in".
I honestly don't care for the individual names, even though they are my family:) Just not my style. As for combining them to make them longer, I could justify doing that if our last name wasn't so crazy.
Elan makes me think "Ellen" or
There are a lot of similar letters to Elaine, Anne & Laurie. If you did find a name that shared them, it wouldn't matter how it came to be; you could leave it simply as "we combined the names of these people"
You have:
4x E, 3x A, 3x N, 2x L, 2x I, 1x R, 1x U (yes, I'm that OCD about this )
If you just concentrate on using any letters from those names you can use Elin or Lainie, Nia, Rielle, Rilee, Lena, Leanne, etc.

Elan looks way too much like Flan for me.
What about Eleanor Laurie?

Thank you girls for your thoughts. My husband and I agreed with you all in that we are taking so many names and trying to make it work. We love the sound of the name E-lin and femmepink, I owe you one because we changed the spelling to Elyn and we love it! and actually lynn was my middle name. So the name started to honor my mom and grandmas and now it's all about me:)
So our daughter will be Elyn Joelle
