Educate me on no-poo!

What do you wash your hair with? I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I just can't figure out what would be best to switch to. I hear a lot of ladies mentioning baking soda wash, whats all in that?

Also, I need something that will manage my dandruff, what can I add for that?

  • Going "no poo" is definitely a process and you'll have to devote some time to tweaking your routine.  That being said, you'll probably find varying comments about what going "no poo" really is.  I've been doing it for about three months and at my last haircut, I received many compliments on how soft my hair was.

For me, I wash my hair with baking soda and rinse with apple cider vinegar (ACV).   Baking soda is a very weak base and so it is thought to be a gentler way to wash your hair.  ACV, a weak acid, will help to balance the pH of your hair and seal your hair shaft, giving you smoother hair.

Specifically, I combine about 6 oz of boiling water with a tablespoon of baking soda and let it cool.  I use boiling water because I have very hard water, but hot water works too .  I put this mixture into a squeeze bottle and pour it over my dry hair in the shower and massage it in for a few minutes.  I start at the roots and work my way down, spending less time on the ends.  Then, I rinse this concoction out of my hair.  For a bit of conditioning, I pour a cup of cool water with a tablespoon of ACV mixed in all over my hair.  I leave this in my hair, but some people prefer to rinse the ACV out with plain water.

Your hair will probably need time to adjust to this new system.  But once your hair is acclimated, you can go longer between washings and you should notice improvements in the quality of your hair and scalp.  It should be a good fit for you if you're experiencing dandruff!

Thanks for being so detailed. This is something I've been meaning to start sometimes soon, too.
