Cloth Diapering

Feeling anxious and confused....

OK, DH and have have decided to go the CD route and we are both really excited about it.  The only problem is the multitude of options make me anxious.  So far, I have a stash of:

5 BG 4.0's, 6 Kawaii, 3 FB's (all pockets)

5 Flips

DS will go to daycare, so we figured that it would be easiest to do pockets when he is there and Flips when he is home with us.

The problem that I am having is that the pockets seem so much easier....  There are so many options of what you can put in the Flips and I don't know what to do.  I know that I could just do trial and error, but I really don't have the money to waste.  If I sold them unused, I could probably get all of my money back, but if I try them out, then of course I would lose some.

I know that people say to get a variety of diapers and see what works best, I'm just feeling a little overwhelmed with the insert options for the Flips.  Each thing (stay dry inserts, organic inserts, or plain prefolds) have pros and cons.

Suggestions?????  I want to move to all pockets, DH wants to try out the Flips.

Thanks!

  • DH will only use pockets. The thought of having to snap in a new insert to the flip mid diaper change is overwhelming to him. As most boys like to do, A likes to pee mid diaper change, so you have to be quick. Pockets are easy. I like the fact that I can grab any of our diapers for daycare and I dont have to think about it. I stuff them out of the was and they go in his dresser. It is quick, easy, and we dont get covered in pee :)

Everyone ends up with their preference

This was another thing that I was thinking about too....it seems like it would be alot to keep up with.  This kind goes here...this kind goes there....etc...

  • At this point you'll get the same amount of money back for EUC diapers (used lightly) as you will your brand new ones.  People won't pay retail unless they're coming straight from the store.  I say go ahead and use them when your LO gets here.

Now, you know these diapers won't fit a newborn, yes?

good to know...  Then I wonder if I should buy a few of each insert to test them out?  The stay dry inserts seem to be the easiest (with a hemp doubler at night), but as I said before some people love them and some hate them.

Yes, we are going to do disposables for NB stage.

  • I would try the Flips out, especially since they are the ones your DH likes best.  I am all for encouraging your DH to like changing diapers.

My DH hates pockets and will reach for anything else first.  He hates taking out the soiled insert and unsnapping it before putting in the pail.  It is less messy to change an AI2.  We always have some ready to go and change the whole thing at once.  Then we let the used cover air out until later.

I don't use Flips, but if I did, I would get some of each. You'll probably use them all, though you may find you choose one type over another for a given situation.

My DH prefers AIO's and to a lesser degree pockets (if they are already stuffed). I like PFs and also flats because they are easier to clean and I have a lot of flexibility. I also change her more often anyway then him, for that reason she is better off in a stay-dry type of diaper with a LOT of absorbency when she is with him. I do the laundry, so it is hard for him to argue that disposables are better when it is exactly the same for him, except he puts the diaper in a her diaper pail instead of the garbage.

  • Hi, congrats on your pregnancy!

I went balls to the wall and got only Flips.  I like the fact I don't have to stuff anything before hand and all I am changing is the insert and not the whole diaper.  Both the hubs and I have gotten pretty quick about removing the old insert and replacing it with a new insert.  Mad skillz.

A couple things I am not loving about the Flips:

    1.  I mentioned in another post, the poo gets all over the diaper and the cover needs to be replaced.

    2. I am using the stay dry inserts and they don't snap in, which sometimes causes it to bunch or shift.

    3. Finally (and this may sound a little silly) but there is definitely added bulk.  I kind of miss the feeling of my tiny baby's butt ;)

I should also mention that I am relatively new to this (only been CD about two weeks, part time) so I am still working out the kinks.
