Parenting after a Loss

Cold weather peeps...

How do I keep LO warm when transporting in and out of vehicles in a convertible carseat?  We're going to be in IN for almost 2 weeks in February (brrr) and also here in a couple of weeks at Christmas.

Also, any recs for hats that will stay on/mittens, etc?  I'm thinking of buying him a coat, yet I know he can't wear it in the carseat so it'd be something I would have to wrangle him in while in the car.  I do NOT miss the Midwest in the winter.  Sad

Re: Cold weather peeps...

  • We put DS in his car seat sans coat & layer blankets on top to keep him warm for the drive.  We also have his car seat in the middle of the backseat, directly in front of the rear heater vents, so he gets warm & toasty really quickly.

When it's time to get out, DH or I hop in the backseat & quickly put on his coat, hat & shoes.  Even if we're just running into church or the store, we like to make sure he stays warm & the hat is a necessity.  We bought one that covers his ears, with a velcro strap under his chin.

    GL!

  • Make sure the car is pre-heated and walk quick.  I put A in my coat usually.  And she won't keep a hat on, but will a hood- so a light fleece jacket works great.... or else while holding her I hold the top of her head- Ridiculous, I'm sure but it works.  Have fun!

  • We always warm the car first, and make sure to have hat and mittens available for her. I have been putting a sweater on her and then covering her with blankets in her newborn seat. I know it's not quite the same as a convertible but I think as long as you have plenty of blankets and a hat/mittens you should be okay. P.S. Velcro hat flaps are SO helpful!

  • Thanks everyone!  I think I'm going to order him a hat today!  Winter hats and mittens are impossible to find for babies around here.

I bought her a car seat poncho - if you were at all crafty, you could totally make one.

    https://www.carseatponcho.com/

It goes over the harness, so it doesn't interfere with the car seat. I drape it over the back, so there is nothing between her and the seat. It is so much better than fighting w/ blankets.

I wouldn't bother with a coat unless you are going to be outside for long periods of time. Hat I got at gymboree, mittens she said "hell no" to so I don't bother.

Genius!!!!  I'm going to try to make this!  I am also working on a leg warming type thing for the stroller, and this would be even better.  Thank you, thank you!

  • I think we need to GTG when you're in IN.  Just sayin'.
