3rd Trimester

Hand Pain??

I'm 31 weeks along and have for the past couple weeks been experiancing hand pain, where it even hurts to write and also random numbness or tingling. Is anyone else experiancing this? I know i'm a little swollen in my hands and feet now and that may play a role in it. I"m going to my doctor Tuesday so i'll ask then as well..but just wanted to see what you ladies thought.

thanks!

Re: Hand Pain??

  • I've had the same problem for probably the last 6 to 8 weeks.  It's much worse when I get up in the morning.  When I asked my doctor about it she said it had to do with carpal tunnel and swelling in the wrist which can cut off some of the circulation to my hands.  She said to try wearing wrist braces at night to keep my wrists straight which should help reduce the problem.  I tried that and it didn't really work for me.  It's really annoying, but should go away after the baby is born.

  • Sounds like carpal tunnel to me. I had it with my first and second pregnancy. It's totally normal and will go away shortly after baby is born.

  • I have it too.  Started at 27 weeks for me.  Yep carpal tunnel.

  • It's carpal tunnel. I am 35 weeks with twins and I have had it since about 16 weeks. It's horrible!!!! It will get worse! Mine is making me MISERABLE!!! I type this now with one hand so I can ice the other. A splint will help but you have to get the kind that *** your wrist up. It should completely immobolize your wrist. This will help some but not a lot and will help more initially than it will later on. When it gets really bad your wrist will ache like nobody's business and you elbow and shoulder will start to hurt too. Eventually if the fluid gets too back your arms will be so achy from all the fluid moving through them that you will want to cut them off. Drink lots of water and try to avoid repetitive motion of the wrist. My best piece of advice... sleep propped up on you back if you can and you have to build walls on both sides of yourself with pillows. You must then sleep with your arms above you on those pillows and your body down below. I know this isn't what you want to hear but be prepared. It's rough stuff! I hope yours doesn't get too bad and I wish you much luck!!

  • I'm sorry! I had that with my first; its likely carpal tunnel syndrome caused by the swelling in your wrists compressing the nerves. Braces for carpal tunnel bought at Walmart helped, especially when worn at night because I tend to bend my hand/wrist down in my sleep. Try to eat less salt to not make the swelling worse and just wait it out mostly.

Mine didn't go away right after birth like I think is usual. The tingling and numbness went away but remained weak and painful for several months. I just kept wearing the braces when I needed them and it did go away though on its own. No sign of it yet with this pregnancy! I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Ugh, I have the same thing.  It started at 34 weeks for me.  Numb, swollen, tingly hands.  Sore when I make a fist.  Sigh.
