Late Term and Child Loss

**Auki13**

I was just wondering (you don't have to answer) how old you are? There was a couple in my loss group last night whose baby also had anencephaly. They were under the impression that it was very rare to happen in younger women (I believe she is 31). Their loss was very fresh (I think her D&E was in October) and they are trying to find answers. She was exposed to some chemicals at work and they are wondering if that was the cause since she is young. TIA.

Re: **Auki13**

  • I am 29 and I have never heard of anencephaly being an age thing.  I am on a few anencephaly support groups and there are plenty of young moms on there as well.  There are research studies going on now trying to figure out what could cause NTD's (Neural Tube Defects) and at this point all that is being said is a lack of folic acid could contribute to these issues.  I had my folic acid levels checked and they are fine, but they still put me on supplements in case I get pregnant again.  There are so many what-ifs with this and I am sorry there aren't any more concrete answers.  Please let them know if they want to contact me via e-mail I would be more than happy to talk to them.  Just send me a PM.
