Leg cramps/pains

So lately I've been having leg cramps in my calves and the last couple of nights I've started to get them, but I've pulled my legs up towards me to where my knees are straight up in the air and they stopped and I could weirdly go back to sleep that way.

Has anyone else had this problem and any advice?

Re: Leg cramps/pains

  • Those would be charlie horses. They're very common.

Drink lots of water and up your potassium intake. That should help.

  • Leg cramps are a sign of dehydration so you may need to drink more water. Bananas help prevent them as well. Also, when you feel one coming in FLEX your foot, don't point it. Flexing can help stop the cramp from climbing up your calf.
  • In pregnancy the way to stop these is with a calcium supplement. One of the most common symptoms, and calcium (not just taking Tums, take an actual supplement) will make these go away. Someone said it on here once, my OB confirmed it, and ever since I added it around week 23, I haven't had a single one.

  • Mine have come back as of late. Best recommendation when you feel them starting on is to pull your toes back toward you/point them toward your chest. Don't point your toes away - that will actually assist with the charlie horse and make it worse. Point your toes toward your chest, wait until the pain eases, and walk around. While up, drink a glass of water. My main culprit is dehydration.

  • The BEST way to get rid of these charlie horses is to get up and walk around.  Took me years to figure this out, but so happy that I finally found the solution.  The pain will stop almost right away.
