Cloth Diapering

Sloomb question

My xsmall, snapped, fitteds are stiff.  I didn't realize *how* stiff until yesterday when we were trying on all the next size up diapers in LO's stash, to see if he had grown into them, and I ran across 6 brand new smalls, just waiting to be worn and I wanted to cuddle up in them they were so soft!

I stopped using the XS a week ago, because I was worried they were crunching his private parts.  Prior to feeling the new diapers, I thought maybe it was because he is nearly grown out of them and they were just not fitting him correctly but now I realize there is something wrong with them.

He is 8.5 weeks and only 9 pounds so we have gotten a lot of use from them, being our go-to night time diaper, so I was ok with packing them away for the next LO but now I realize if I could get them to soften, he has a couple more pounds to grow in them and I want to get every day I can out of them, they are so great for night time..

Anyone?

I tried soaking them last night and then washed using Rocking Green and a CD safe softener and they came out a but softer, but not much.  Could they be stiff from detergent?  I have a front loader.

Re: Sloomb question

  • They could be stiff from detergent build up. Try stripping them to see if that helps. Otherwise, you can try an ecover soak on them (if that isn't what you have already tried for softener).

  • Before you try stripping, I'd do an ecover soak.

Chances are they are stiff because the OBF they are made out of stiffens up after many uses.  Did you buy them new or used? Do you hang dry or machine dry? If you hang dry, try machine drying for the first 10-15 mins, then pull out to hang dry the rest of the way.   If you machine dry, try not drying until totally dry.  Pull them out when they are nearly all the way dry and let them hang the rest of the time.  Heat is really rough on natural fibers.

I'll second the ecover soak.  Ecover is like magic.  Just don't use it on PUL items (it's hard on the laminate).

  • Are you drying them in the dryer or line drying? With mine, I had to dry them in the drier otherwise they would become really stiff.
  • Well, I used RLR (is that stripping?  Ug.. I have so much to learn) and they came out sparkling white!  And then I dried on low for 30 min and hun them on the back of my dining room chairs overnight and they are still stiff :(  I am on the hunt for Ecover now.  I haven't seen it anywhere around here (MA), suggestions on where to find it?  I found an Ecover detergent at Wholefoods but they didn't have the softener.  Or maybe it was the other way around.. hmm..

I bought them new. I have an HE front loader.  I use hard rock, rockin green (but prior used Ecos pure and gentle). I normally dry them on hot and then line dry to sun.  Could I have ruined them from drying them on hot so many times?  eek!
