WWYD: fire in hotel where we stayed

We were in York, PA last weekend for a wedding.  There was a fire in the hotel and DH had to be evacuated out of the hotel.  THANK GOODNESS HE'S OK!  However, he missed the ceremony as a result of not being able to get in to the hotel to get dressed.  I was in the wedding so I was at my friend's house when this was going on.  I drove passed the hotel and saw the fire trucks.  I was in the car as DH paid for the hotel.  He didn't ask for a discount or anything.  The more I think about it, I think we should have gotten a discount off for that night.  The place still smelled like smoke.  Would you call and complain?

Re: WWYD: fire in hotel where we stayed

  • Did you end up staying there for the night?  If so I think I would just let it go.  I'm glad no one was hurt!

  • Hmm, to me it would depend on the cause of the fire.  If it was a guests fault then I probably wouldn't complain because there is nothing that the hotel staff could have done to prevent.  If it was an accidental fire or something way beyond their control then I don't think I'd complain either.  If it were due to something negligent on the hotel staffs part then, yes, I would complain.

  • Yes we stayed for the night.  This happened at 2 ish in the afternoon and we didn't get back to the hotel until around 1 am.  The clothes dryer caught on fire which caused the entire hotel to fill with smoke.
  • Reminds me of a vacation DH and I took to Montana.  There were forest fires sweeping through the area.  In the middle of the night, they knocked on our door and told us that the fires were coming but that all was fine.  DH and I decided to wait until morning (it was the middle of nowhere) but we could hear families with children leaving.  We left the next AM because they closed the hotel and we had to cross our fingers that we could check into another place we had stayed (which we did) because everything was booked all over with the evacuations.

Anyway, I never asked for a discount even though our stay was cut short but I spent a full night.  I think I'd ask for a refund if he got kicked out early.
