RCS- when will they let you leave the hospital?

With my DS, we stayed for 5 days. My milk came in on day 4 and we had latching issues, so we just chose to stay. This time, I want to come home as soon as possible, particularly given we have my DS at home (my MIL is coming to stay with him). I have very little desire to spend time in the hospital, now that we're not first time parents, I'd just rather be at home!

So when is the soonest they'll let you leave? 4 days?

Re: RCS- when will they let you leave the hospital?

  • For both CSs (one in the morning, one in the evening), I was able to leave after 2 nights.  If I had really begged, my OB would have let me leave after a night and a full day, but we both agreed that it would have been pushing it.

I had the exact same feelings as you about getting out of the hospital to get back home with DS.  I'm sure you know that getting up and moving early and often will help you feel better.  I think the fact that I asked to have my catheter removed asap, that I did hourly laps around the unit while DS was sleeping, and that I kept insisting on getting my own water gave my OB confidence that I really was fine to leave.

I hope you get a nice, quick stay!

Yes, everything you've stated is exactly how I feel! With my last c-section, I asked to get up and move around right away and they made me wait, and then my night nurse wouldn't allow it. This time I'm not accepting no-- at least I'm more educated on the entire experience! My surgery is scheduled next Thursday at 8:30am, so hopefully they'll let us go home by Saturday. I absolutely do not want to stay until Sunday/Monday.

  • I stayed two days for my RCS.  Standard at my hospital is three days, but DS and I were doing well so I was able to go home sooner.

  • My OB said he would have let me leave after 24hrs with DS2 if I really wanted to but he didn't think I would want to. I wouldn't have been ready after 24 hrs because I still got very dizzy if I stood up or walked for too long. I chose to stay for the full 4 days but would have been fine to leave after 48 hrs.

  • I stayed 2 nights for both rcs, a day earlier than my hospital's norm. I NEEDED to get out. I was bored and I missed my babies. Plus, this time around I didn't want to be in the hospital for Thanksgiving.

  • With DD I had her on a Fri. night and I left Mon. morning. I could have left Sun. afternoon but I wasn't ready.

With this LO I am scheduled for a Wed. morning and she said I could leave as early as Fri. morning pending no complications.

I really want to get home to DD.

  • Well, we are supposed to stay for 3 nights...and if you give birth later in the evening it is usually upped to 4.  (what happened with my first 2).

But I actually use my hospital time to sleep and rest and don't get in a big rush to get home.  I love my kids whole heartedly but I just know how crazy things will be once I get home with 2 older boys running around and know that my sleep times will be limited.  So I am staying as long as I can this time around.  I go in on Wednesday morning and will be glad to stay until Saturday.

  • I just had my RCS last Wednesday at 130 am. OB would have discharged me Friday (2 overnights) if I wanted but decided to come home on Saturday instead. I have to say I feel way better Saturday morning so I think the extra rest really helped. DD was at my parents house and my Mom wasn't bringing her back until Sunday so I wasn't going to see her any sooner.

  • With my RCS, I left after 2 days...had DS2 at 8am on a Monday and left around noon on Wednesday.
  • With DS1, I had him at 11pm on a Sunday night and was out first thing Wednesday morning. With DS2, I had him on a Thursday AM and was out Sunday AM. I could have left on Saturday but I waited another day. I liked having a chance to bond more with DS2 before we came home to the craziness of having boys 15 months apart.

  • I had an emergency c-section on November 22 and was allowed to leave on the morning of November 24.  My DS was born at 7:29 p.m., so I didn't really spend a lot of time in the hospital.

It was my first baby and I figured I could deal with the pain - plus I wanted to be home for Thanksgiving - but now I wish I stayed in the hospital a bit longer.  I've been doing way too much and my incision has been bothering me like crazy.  I'm still taking the pain meds two weeks after!

So, I understand you want to be home, but don't rush it - it's better to heal a bit before going home especially when you have another LO at home!

     Lots of luck.

  • I will be having my 3rd and will stay as long as they want me too. I am no good to my kids if I am not rested and recovered somewhat! I do know alot of people like to leave ASAP though. If you can handle it then I say go for it!!!

  • I went in for my c-section Friday Morning (it was scheduled for 8am) and we left Sunday morning at 10am. It was so boring in the hospital and I was going crazy, No one came on Saturday to visit (people wanted to let me get my rest) I thought I was going to go crazy in the small room. This was my first baby, first c-section. My LO was breech.
