3rd Trimester

Pain in the night...some sort of weird contraction?

Whenever I wake up at night and have to pee, I wake up in pain, when I roll over and get out of bed, it feels like major pressure in my pelvis.  As soon as I empty my bladder though, I feel so much better and can go back to sleep.  This has only been happening for the last week and I'm wondering if it's just increased pressure on my bladder, maybe at a weird angle when I'm sleeping or if it could be some type of contraction or mean that the baby has moved down.

  • No answer, but I have the exact same thing and am curious to the responses you get.

  • I think it's just the baby pressing a strange way, especially if you are sleeping on your side, against your bladder which is just increasing pressure.  I get it all the time and the baby has not really moved down at all.

  • Same thing has been happening to me over the past week! I feel like LO gets in a low ball when I sleep and when I wake up to pee, i feel so much pressure! I have no clue what it is.  Generally only feel it during the night, not during the day.

  • When I was in L&D at 32 weeks for PTL I was told to keep my bladder as empty as possible. The nurses said, and so did the paperwork I was given, that a full bladder can cause contractions.

  • I would agree with PP of trying to keep your bladder empty.  I had been experiencing this pain only in the mornings when my bladder was full.. until about 2 weeks ago when all of a sudden I felt an excruciating pain on the bottom right side (close to panty line). First call to on-call doctor - they said to drink lots of water, take 2 tylenol, and lie down for an hour and to call again if pain didnt subside.  When the pain got worse, and I had chills and cold sweats, they said to go into L&D.  Turns out I had an asymptomatic bladder infection and they gave me antibiotics to treat it (dont want it to get to the kidneys).

Sorry for the long post, just hoping I can save someone from going through the pain I went through!

  • I love how they tell us to keep an empty bladder yet to drink a gallon of water a day.  I guess we need to stay near a restroom all day long!

  • No answers...  Does it feel like someone is ripping apart the point of the center of your pelvic bone?  I've had that going on the past couple weeks and it's only gotten worse.  If I sleep on my side it feels like whichever hip is on top is going to lock in place then if I move that point is going to be beyond painful...  The only thing I've found that helps is sleeping in more of a reclined position than on my sides...

  • I started waking up in the middle of the night pretty consistently at about 36 weeks as well. My midwife told me hormones peak between midnight and 5am, which explains the waking & so many babies being born in the early hours. Well, anyway my theory is that it's kinda all of the above that you suggested - baby is awake while we're trying to sleep & moves into a position that presses on your bladder --> you wake up & really have to pee; baby has moved his/her way down and continues to move down, or at least explore down there, while you're sleeping  --> more pressure & you have to pee; midnight contractions are totally possible - I've been having them & wake up with some serious back pain and feel overwhelmingly hot.

  • I have been having this once or twice a night for the past few days and wondering what it was as well.
