What's the difference?

Hot tubs are a no no, but warm baths are ok?  What's the difference?  I hope I'm just being crazy and paranoid, but I haven't heard anywhere that a bath is off limits and I love baths.  Now they are no longer relaxing though because the entire time all I can think about is how I might be baking my bean.  Please tell me to chill out!!!

Re: What's the difference?

  • It's all about how high your body temp reaches. Hot tubs are much hotter, and fuller then a warm bath. So the chances of your body temp changing is different.

  • I wish I could tell you to chill out, but years ago (when when I was younger and not expecting to be pregnant) I took a bath to relieve some back pain (I knew nothing about being pregnant and didn't know any better about taking bath/being in hot tubs etc.) A few hours after the bath I started bleeding and ended up having a m/c... So my advice is don't take a bath or take one with extreme caution. This time around you won't see me taking a bath and I am evem paranoid about hot showers.

  • I will be the one to (nicely) tell you to chill out. Just like drinking a minimum amount of water each day, the ban on taking hot baths is a guideline I poo-poo. Surely our bodies know when they are overheating and we feel the results immediately: flushed cheeks, sweating brow, light-headedness, nausea even. And as soon as a hot bath becomes uncomfortable we get the heck out because our body has built-in triggers for this kind of thing. I believe hot tubs are set at a higher temperature than most hot baths are drawn and you often immerse yourself up to the neck (including extremeties) as opposed to in the bathtub where your arms, knees and feet are often above water level for cooling. This.

I'm pretty sure they say to keep your bath water under 100 degrees.

  • I think I read this in The Pregnancy Bible or maybe somewhere else but they said the main reason to stay away from hot tubs (other than the heat) is because of all the bacteria that is found in them.  They say the risk of infection is high.
