December 2011 Moms

Why won't my water break?!

They say that it's very uncommon for FTM's to have their water break spontaneously, however on this board, it's like every woman has gone into labor because he water broke! What gives?!

I'm a 2nd time mom, sitting at 4cm, water bag bulging, and NOTHING! I swear you all are doing something that makes or at least helped your water break, so spill the beans! I am 2 days overdue, and DESPERATE to have a VBAC!

  • I dont know, mine never breaks either. Mine was finally broken at 7cm last time around. Maybe I can get to 10cm with a full bag of water this time, lol. Maybe we just have strong bags of water!?

Yep, they broke my water last time at 8 cm to keep labor rolling. My Mom said none of her 3 kids waters broke and her 3rd was actually born in the water.

Funny you say this--I got to 10cm before the MW broke mine because I stalled at 10. 14 minutes later my baby was born. She said the bag of water was really tough. She had to pull on the hook quite hard to finally get it to break.

OP I am rooting for you to get your VBAC!! Come on out LO!

  • I think the reason why we are getting so many birth stories that begin with the water breaking is because those women tend to deliver early.  I think you will see a big shift in a few weeks to more women going into labor and having their water broken at the hospital, those women (like me) just tend to go to their due date (or past it).

  • With my second, they had to break it when I was at 8cm.  I don't know if it broke on it's own with my third, or if it was because they kept trying, but DD's head was right there and they couldn't get it to break, but helped it along (it broke while they gave me my epidural, and she had scratches on her head from them trying to break it).  I hope it breaks soon so you get your VBAC.  Maybe some squats, sex, or something.  I don't know.

That's probably true. I have heard having an infection (UTI, virus or something similar) can break your water. I am sure I'll be in the overdue group in a few weeks and I'm okay with that, been there done that, lol.

  • If it makes you feel any better mine didnt break until labor-- but when it did break in labor it was 4 minutes between the time it broke and the baby being out! I'm also a 2nd time mom and my water didnt break with my 1st child either--my midwife broke it when I was 8cm.

  • I had my water broke last week at 38 weeks and 4 days. The night before I went dancing and we are thinking that's was what caused it to break.

  • Okay, these replies are making me feel better! I especially like the one about maybe having a strong bag of water. With DD, my water was broken when I went in for an induction, so I don't know if it ever would've broken on it's own!

I think just the fact that I am 4cm and the bag of water is bulging, that's throwing me for a loop! I would've thought it would break by now, but maybe mine is made of steel! :)

  • With my first my OB had to break it after I'd already been in labour for hours and admitted. With my second it broke on it's own but only minutes before she was born as DH was running me through EMERG in the wheel chair. I'm hoping it breaks this time though so I have a heads up .. my labours start so suddenly with full blown contractions and with such a fast one last time I'd like a bit of warning that things are about to get moving! :)

  • Jumping jacks?
Hahaha I don't know. My water did not "break" with my 1st pregnancy (although it trickled a little the day I went into labour) and I'm only 3 days away now and I don't think I'm even dilated or effaced or anything like that. However I have heard (stories from prenatal class teacher who was also a doula) of women delivering their baby still IN the amniotic sac..that would be awfully weird

  • I think water breaks spontaneously (as in water breaking signifies start of labor) in like 10-12% of all labors, so the odds are against you. Tv and movies build up the breaking of the water into this big, exciting, rite of passage into labor so that leaves most of us disappointed, lol.

DH is in retail management, and this week he had 3 different women recommend jumping jacks! They all said that they did them until their legs hurt, would take 20-30 minute breaks, and then do them again. They did it for about an hour, and all 3 of them apparently went into labor within 8 hours!

Hell, I'm willing to try anything. So I did them today and now my vagina hurts. I don't know if that's good or bad haha!

Well, let us know if that works for you. Guess we'll see you up on the birth announcements if it does, but that sounds like one way to use up all your energy before you even go into labor. Well, good luck! I'm hoping mine breaks or that I will at least go into real labor here soon! These BH are enough to make a girl crazy.
