So what if I'm sick when I go into labor?

I had my weekly appointment yesterday and my doctor stripped my membranes. This morning I woke up to two surprises, I lost my MP (I'm not sure if this is a sign of impending labor, or if it's just because she stripped my membranes?) and I have an awful cold! I have a sore throat and a bad cough but no fever. I've also been having contractions off and on all day, nothing too bad and they're still a little sporadic.. I'm hoping they don't get any worse until I have time to get over the cold.  I've been so worried about people touching my LO and getting him sick, and now I'm the one with the germs! I'm so worried that I'm going to end up in L&D and then not be able to enjoy bonding time with the baby because I'm sick Sad

  • I'm really interested to see responses because I'm in the exact same boat! I have a terrible cold and so does DH! His may be even worse than mine so I'm freaking out that first I won't have the energy to deliver naturally and then have to worry about LO getting sick!

  • I'm scared of that too especially since I work with germy kids all day and I will until my due date! I had them Clorox their desks today and I went around the room wiping down all handles and such! I hope I can ward off the bugs!

  • No answers, but I sympathize - I have a cold too :( So far it's just coughing and sneezing but it's still bugging me; I'm going to ask my OB about it at my appointment on Tuesday.

Maybe we'll all miraculously feel better by the time our babies are born, heh

  • I had a cold for a few weeks, and I was really afraid of having it during delivery just because it affects my breathing/energy so much!!  I told my doctor about it, and he suggested Nyquil and Afrin nasal spray.  I was surprised to hear Nyquil because of the alcohol, but he said the amount you'd get from one dose is less than you'd get if you were to sniff a cotton ball of rubbing alcohol lol.  As you probably know, colds last for forever because there's no cure for them, so the mucus that stops you up continues to drip into your throat, causing your throat to hurt, etc...like an endless cycle.  Well, after one night with Afrin (which cleared up my nostrils like magic) and Nyquil (which helped me rest appropriately), my cold was completely gone.  I went from sneezing every 5 minutes and breathing out of my mouth back to breaking out my nose today!  Again, there's no cure, but I'm officially a firm believer in the Afrin/Nyquil combo!  Hope you feel better!
  • I came down with a bad cold the day before I went into labor with my DS.  To be honest, it was awful.  I didn't get much sleep beforehand so when I went into labor I was already exhausted and feeling like crap. When I got to the hospital, I had a fever and was given antibiotics through an IV.  They also drew blood to test for something, not sure for what, but they needed to know if the baby would need to be given antibiotics after he was born.  I was freezing cold during labor and was even covered up in blankets as I was pushing.  I had to stay hooked up to the IV for 24 hours after my fever broke, so the whole day after DS was born, I was still hooked up.  My DS never caught my cold thankfully but it sure made my labor and delivery much more miserable!

  • I had pneumonia when I went into pre-term labor with my third child.  It actually helped labor.  I coughed a lot lol which moved him down the birth canal instead of me pushing.  I pushed 3 times and he was born.  I was on an antibiotic when I went into labor so they just let me finish that out instead of doing an IV.  I was allowed to visit him in the NICU but I did have to wear a mask, gown and washing my hands was a regular practice.  To be honest this labor was my favorite because it was really painful at all.  I am not sure if it was because I was by myself through labor and delivery or if the coughing and stuff helped.

  • LO is already being exposed to the sick germs that have gotten you sick as well as the antibodies that your body is making to fight the germs.  The same goes for when you are breastfeeding.  Generally it's not a concern for things like the common cold.
