UTI Home remedies (kinda long)

Hey Ladies,

I've been a lurker on the board for awhile now. I'm 9 weeks 5 days. I wasn't trying to get pregnant, and was using protection but it happened anyway! Surprise!

I went to the doctor two and a half weeks ago for my first appt. They called me later that day and said it looked like I had a UTI but were waiting for the culture results. Well two days went by and I hadn't heard anything. I had an appointment with my kidney specialist (to discuss my pregnancy) and she looked to see what the labs had come up with it and they were inconclusive. She ordered another urine test. That one came back and again they said they wanted me to start antibiotics. Seems normal, right? But I guess it turns out that I'm allergic to all the medicines that are safe for pregnancy. First, they asked me to take one I was allergic too, and I said no because it was one I had a severe reaction to. Now they want me to take one that's not 100% safe for pregnancy. This makes me nervous! I'm guessing that since I've had this UTI for two weeks (no symptoms that I know of) that maybe antibiotics aren't necessary now? I'm not a doctor though.

So I guess to stop rambling and get to the point, I want to try a few home remedies first before I cave into the antibiotics (I'm not usually anti-medicine). I know about cranberry juice and lots of fluids, does anyone else know of any others? Your help would be much appreciated!

I'm really prone to getting UTIs... ever since I was a little kid.  I take one cranberry vitamin a night (with the rest of my pre natal vitamins)

    Seems to work for me.

Yes I'm allergic to Macrobid. How bad is it to take medicine that's not pregnancy approved? But no, I definitely don't want it to get worse.

UTI's are very regular for me.  I just have a sensitive bladder.  I usually drink LOTS of water and LOTS of cranberry juice.  Make sure it is cranberry juice and not cocktail.  When they get bad I do have to take antibiotics though.

I am prone to getting UTI's. Most of the time I don't notice I have them until a doctor tells me so. This is bad because it can lead to severe kidney infection. Drinking tons of water can help, but I'm afraid it won't go away without antibiotics. I don't know what your allergic to, but I take Keflex when I'm pregnant vs. bactrim when I'm not.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm also prone to UTI's and I guess I was just hoping there was some magically treatment I hadn't heard of before. I usually just take the medicine the doctor gives me. Hopefully tomorrow when they call I'll actually get to talk to my doctor (I've been talking to the office nurses). I'm a music teacher and my prep time is extremely limited so it's hard to get to talk to the doctor. Sorry if I sound like a nervous nelly, I think being pregnant is just starting to actually hit me the last couple of days and I'm becoming hyper aware of all of my decisions.

Like PP said...LOTS of water, LOTS of cranberry juice (100%, no sugar added!) I dread UTI's because of the pain...and my sister and I are prone to them. I assume you already know to only wipe front to back.

Also, don't mix your doggies with your missionaries when doing the nasty. A guy switching back and forth, could be spreading bacteria back and forth. Pee soon after sex (every time!). For a while, I was also drinking some Cran juice after sex.
