Light Headed - Something else besides Iron

Long story short, I am anemic and on iTC iron pills three times a day. I still feel lightheaded sometimes (right now) could my iron be THAT low, or is could it be something else? :( I am sitting here eating thinking maybe it is low blood sugar but that doesn't seem to be helping either.

Re: Light Headed - Something else besides Iron

  • I have always had low blood pressure, I black-out every once in a while.  I haven't found something that works, but I know it's my blood pressure

  • :) well you know I just web md'd myself. I checked my pulse and it seems to be high enough :) That checks your blood pressure right? GOSH I am a dork.
  • I agree with the low blood pressure.  Mine is always really low and my ob told me to be careful when getting up because I will get light headed which is true.  I would talk to your Dr about it!

  • low blood sugars or low blood pressure. (no pulse won't tell about your BP) or even dehyration.

Whe you get faint when standing, it's referred as "orthostatic hypotension". You should sit up, wiggle your toes and pump your ankles a couple of times, and use caution when you get up for at least 5 seconds.

  • Another "low blood pressure" vote.  Your pulse is not an indication of blood pressure.  You need a cuff to measure it.

And....there's nothing to do to help it with the exception of staying well hydrated.  Just one of the many joys of pregnancy.

You're at the right part of pregnancy to start noticing it.  I didn't have it with my first pregnancy but did with my second.

The OB's advice?  Put your toddler down and sit down ASAP when you get dizzy.  Don't fall.  (nice advice, huh?  "don't fall")

OB said it should get better in the 3rd tri.  It's mostly a second tri issue.  No such luck here.  I had it all the way thru delivery.

Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I essentially passed out once at my OB's office.  They checked EVERYTHING (even sent me down to the ER...office is at the hospital), and everything was fine.  I'm convinced I was just dehydrated.  So my advice is drink as much water as you can stand, and then drink a lot more.  Seriously, carry a giant water bottle around at all times, and constantly drink.  It's insane how much water you really need.
