Breastfeeding

bloody milk?

does anyone have any experience with this?

I was pumping today and noticed that the milk from one side was red and when I disconnected the pump I had a cut under my nipple that was bleeding (maybe from my DD biting lately!).

anyway, has anyone fed bloody milk to your baby?  I read on breastfeeding.com that it is ok, it just makes me nervous.

I struggle with low supply, so it makes me sad to think of dumping even a few ounces!

thanks!

Re: bloody milk?

  • Yep, it's ok.  A bit weird to think about, but it won't hurt her.

    Hope your cut heals up!

  • Yep, it's fine. I had "rusty pipes" when DD was first born. Blood came out with the colostrum. The LC said it was fine and to just keep nursing.

  • Yep, I had a friend who had Mastitis really bad and her LC told her to keep nursing even with bloody milk.
